BOSTON, MA — The fifth-ranked Northeastern University women’s hockey team improved to 10-0-0 on the season with a 2-0 victory over eighth-ranked Niagara on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena. The Huskies can credit their special teams with leading the way to victory. Northeastern held Niagara to 0-6 on the power-play, while the Huskies scored a shorthanded and a power-play goal. Northeastern is now 6-0-0 in ECAC Eastern play while Niagara drops to 6-1-0 in league action. After a scoreless first period, Northeastern got on the board at 5:43 of the second. On the power-play, senior Julianne Socha (East Longmeadow, MA) scored off a rebound of a Brooke Whitney (Snohomish, WA) shot for her third goal of the season. The Huskies added to their lead at 11:36. Playing a skater down, Brooke White (Berkeley, CA) took a pass from Kim Greene (Everett, MA) and skated out of the NU zone into the Niagara end. White avoided a Niagara defender and passed to her right to Whitney. The senior captain moved in on Niagara goalie Tania Pinelli (Hamilton, ONT) and slid the puck back to White who deposited her fourth goal of the season. The Purple Eagles kept most of the third period action in the Northeastern end and had numerous quality scoring chances. But sophomore goalie Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA) was up to the challenege, stopping 13 shots in the third period and all 33 she faced for the game. It was Gunn’s second solo shutout of the season and the fourth for Northeastern as a team. Pinelli finished the game with 21 saves for Niagara. The 10-0-0 start for Northeastern is its best since the 1991-92 team began the year 11-0-0. The Huskies will have a shot at their 11th straight win on Sunday when they are back in action against Niagara at 2 p.m. SCORING First Period: no scoring.
