BOSTON, MA — For the second straight day, the fifth-ranked Northeastern women’s hockey team overcame a 2-0 first period deficit to defeat the Providence Friars. NU was victorious on Sunday at Matthews Arena 3-2 over the Friars a day after defeating PC 6-3. With the win, NU improves to 12-1-0, 8-1-0 ECAC Eastern while Providence drops to 4-7-2, 1-4-1 ECAC Eastern. Freshman Marisa Hourihan (Hanover, MA) came on in relief of starter Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA) to stop all 30 shots she faced to pick up the win in goal for NU. Brook Whitney (Snohomish, WA) had a goal and an assist while Brooke White (Berkeley, CA) had a pair of assists. PC jumped out to a 1-0 lead only 2:56 into the game. Hilary Greaves tried to center a pass from behind the NU net. Gunn attempted to break up the play, but the puck deflected off her pads and into the net for the goal. The Friars added to their lead at 9:26 of the first. Darlene Stephenson (Virden, MAN) deflected a Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, CA) shot past Gunn. The Huskies made the goalie change following the second Providence goal. Northeastern remained behind 2-0 until 14:45 of the second period. On the power-play, senior Erica Archambeau (Pelkie, MI) scored her first goal of the season on a blast from the right point. NU tied the game only 43 seconds later. Freshman Lori DiGiacomo (Temecula, CA) tipped in a White shot for her first collegiate goal, tying the game 2-2. The Huskies took the lead at 8:40 of the final period. White put a shot on net from the right point that deflected off of Whitney’s skate and into the goal for the go-ahead score. On Saturday in Providence, PC took a 2-0 lead in the first period, but NU scored the game’s next five goals on its way to a 6-3 victory. For Hourihan, it was her second win of the season. In 113 minutes played this season she has stopped all 46 shots she has faced. Sophomore Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, LA) made 20 saves for the Friars. Northeastern next plays on Friday at Harvard.
