Cambridge, MA -- The fourth-ranked Northeastern women's hockey team notched a goal in each period to defeat ninth-ranked Harvard 3-1 at the Bright Hockey Center on Friday night.
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a first period goal by Bekka Lass (Harvre, MT). Lass took a shot that bounced off a Harvard defenseman but the rebound fell in front of the goal and Lass poked it past Crimson goalie Jessica Ruddock (Guelph, ONT). Harvard tied it just more than four minutes into the second period as Nicole Corriero (Thornhill, ONT) netted her 14th goal of the season on a power play with assists from Tracy Catlin (Cambridge, MA) and Jamie Hagerman (Wenham, MA). Northeastern regained the lead with 12 seconds left in the middle stanza. With the puck bouncing around in a crowd of players, Julianne Socha (East Longmeadow, MA) put her stick on it and knocked it into the goal.
Harvard was on the verge of tying the game for much of the final period, including several strong chances on one of its four powerplay attempts. The Huskies withstood the pressure, largely due the play of goalie Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA) who made 23 saves in the game. Harvard outshot Northeastern 10-4 in the third but the Huskies tallied an insurance goal by Lindsay Ball (Victoria, BC) to seal the win.
After going through a seven-game winless streak against the Crimson, Northeastern has now won two-straight over Harvard. NU defeated Harvard 3-2 last time they played, Feb. 25 of last season.
Northeastern improves to 13-1-0 while Harvard is now 5-5-1. The Huskies return to action on Saturday at home against Brown.
