STORRS, CT – Kim Berry’s (Haverhill, MA) two goals and one assist helped lift the University of Connecticut women’s hockey team past No. 2 (USA Today) nationally-ranked Northeastern University, 3-1, on Friday evening at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs.
The ECAC Eastern League match-up improved UConn to 8-8-1 overall, 5-3-0 in the ECAC. NU drops to 14-2-0, 8-2-0 in the ECAC. It was NU’s first game since a 2-1 victory over Brown Dec. 8.
Connecticut dominated the first period of play outshooting Northeastern, 19-5, as the two teams remained scoreless.
UConn opened the second period scoring on a quick goal at the 1:21 mark. Stefanie Snow (Bedford, NH) tipped in a shot from in front of the net on assists from Berry and Tiffany Owens (Belleville, MI). At the 12:04 mark, Northeastern’s Brooke Whitney (Snohomish, WA) broke through several Connecticut players and took a slap shot from just inside the left face-off circle. UConn goalie Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) made the save, but the puck bounced out and fell over the goal line to tie the score.
Berry scored the game-winner with 4:54 left in the third period. Berry played a puck off a Shannon Connolly (Baldwinsville, NY) shot from the left side of the net. Berry brought the puck around the backside of the net and stuffed it into the right corner under Northeastern goalie Chandra Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA). At the 19:09 mark, Berry scored her second goal into an empty Northeastern net.
Murphy improved her record to 7-8-1, stopping 20 shots on goal. Gunn suffered her second loss of the season, recording 31 saves in net. UConn outshot Northeastern, 34-21.
Northeastern will next play a pair of game s at Maine Jan. 12 and 13.
