ORONO, ME – The third-ranked Northeastern women’s hockey team shut out Maine 3-0 on Saturday night at Alfond Arena. Sophomroe goaltender Chanda Gunn stopped 34 shots for her third shutout of the season.

Maine had some good chances early in the game but came up empty and the teams skated into the first intermission scoreless.

In the second, it was back and forth again until Brooke Whitney broke the scoreless tie by slipping one between the post and Maine goaltender Lara Smart at 9:35 for her 13th of the season. Assisting on the goal were Nicole Lewis and Pamela Pachal.

Maine’s Jamie Hill took a penalty as time expired in the second, which led to a power play goal for Northeastern’s Lindsay Ball at 1:57 of the third from Whitney and Kim Greene. Maine continued to find open shots, but Gunn made several quality saves to preserve the shutout. Brooke White added her eighth of the season, an empty net goal, at 18:48 of the third from Greene and Michelle Lorion to complete the scoring.

Maine goalie Smart made 17 saves, as the Black Bears dropped to 8-10-2 (2-7-2), and Northeastern improved to 15-2-0 (9-2-0) on the season. The two teams will meet again tomorrow, January 13, for a 3:00 p.m. start.
