PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Northeastern women’s hockey team extended its winning streak to eight games while snapping Providence’s eight-game unbeaten streak with a 5-1 victory over the Friars at Schnedier Arena. With the win, Northeastern sweeps the season series from Providence.

Northeastern's Brooke Whitney (Snohomish, WA) tallied a hat trick, including two shorthanded goals to lift the Huskies to their eighth straight win. Whitney has 26 goals on the season to lead the Huskies and has scored 11 in her last four games. Brooke White (Berkeley, CA) also continued her impressive play with a goal and two assists.

Sophomore Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA) was impressive in net, stopping 37 of 38 shots she faced for her 18th victory of the season.

Northeastern opened the scoring with five seconds left in the first period as Whitney scored a shorthanded goal. In the second period, Michelle Lorion (Mississauga, ONT) and Whitney scored one goal each in a span of 20 seconds to put Northeastern up, 3-0. White increased the lead to 4-0 as she recorded her 13th goal of the season. Providence's Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored on a slapshot from just inside the blueline. Juniors Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) and Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) assisted on the goal.

The Friars outshot the Huskies, 38-15. PC's Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) and Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) combined to stop 10 shots.

With the loss, the Friars fell to 12-9-3 overall and 6-5-2 in ECAC Eastern League play. The Huskies improved to 22-2-0 overall and 12-2-0 in league play.

Northeastern is back in action on Saturday night at home against New Hampshire.
