|
No. 4 Northeastern proved to have enough to ward off pesky Quinnipiac in a 3-1 win on Saturday night at the Northford Ice Pavilion. NU peppered Quinnipiac junior goaltender Mel Courtemanche, who stopped an incredible total of 56 shots.
The Huskies got on the board at 9:33 of the opening period. Kim Greene's shot from the point deflected off a Quinnipiac player and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Northeastern doubled its lead at 3:22 of the second frame on a tally from Brooke Whitney. Trazana Brown's goal with 1:30 left in the middle stanza padded the lead to 3-0.
Quinnipiac battled back with a strong third period. The Braves finally broke through when Liz Jankowski buried a loose puck at 8:18 of the frame. Caitlin Peters and Hilary Bulger assisted on the goal.
The hosts had two power plays following their goal, but failed to get any closer.
The teams will conclude the weekend doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Matthews Arena.
