CANTON, NY - Junior Michelle Lorion deflected a shot over St. Lawrence goalie Rachel Barrie with just fractions of a second left in overtime to give Northeastern a 3-2 win over third-ranked St. Lawrence in women's hockey action at Appleton Arena on Friday night.

After a Saints' flurry of shots nearly ended the game with 30 seconds left in overtime, Northeastern broke into the SLU end. Barrie made three point-blank saves before the puck trickled out to Kim Greene at the left point. Greene, who had a goal and two assists, took a slap shot and Lorion redirected it into the top-right corner of the net at 4:59.9 of the overtime session for the win.

Following a scoreless first period, Northeastern got on the scoreboard just 36 seconds into the second period. Greene redirected a centering pass from Brooke Whitney over Barrie's shoulder. The Huskies took a 2-0 lead at 6:38 of the second when Brooke White shoved home a rebound from Greene's shot from the point.

SLU cut the lead in half less than two minutes later when Shannon Smith beat Chanda Gunn with a power-play goal at 8:37. It is the first goal NU has allowed this season and the first goal Gunn has allowed in her last 147:40 of action. The last goal Gunn allowed also was scored by St. Lawrence last season, Feb. 11.

With 4:38 left in the second period, the Saints tied the game as Sara Simard, who assisted on the first SLU goal, buried a centering pass from Smith.

Gunn finished the game with 30 saves for NU, while Barrie had 29.

The same two teams will play again on Saturday night.
