BOSTON, MA — The fourth ranked Northeastern women’s hockey team lost to New Hampshire 2-1 on Thursday night during senior night at Matthews Arena. Northeastern had won the previous four games between the two rivals. UNH’s last victory over NU was a 9-1 win Jan. 15, 2000.

Trailing 1-0 after two periods, the Wildcats rallied in the third on goals by a pair of freshmen. Freshman Kristi Shaw (Belleville, ONT) scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game. Shaw deflected Kristen Thomas’s (Wilmington, MA) centering pass past NU goalie Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA) for the game-tying goal at 11:32 of the third. The game-winning goal came with only 1:33 remaining in the game. Freshman Stephanie Jones (Kimberley, BC) scored on a wrist shot from the left slot off a pass from Debbie Bernhard (Acton, MA). It was Jones’ tam-leading 17th of the season. Junior Kristine Butt (Pembroke, MA) assisted on both goals for the Wildcats. It was the first time in 22 games that NU had lost this season when leading after two periods.

Following a scoreless first period, Northeastern got on the board at 11:45 of the second period. Senior Brooke Whitney (Snohomish, WA) took a pass in front from Brooke White (Berkeley, CA) and wrapped the puck around UNH goalie Jen Huggon (Plymouth, MA). It was Whitney’s 30th goal of the season. She is just the fifth NU player to ever score 30 goals in one season.

In a battle between two of the top goalies in the ECAC Eastern, Huggon finished the game with 29 saves while Gunn made 25.

Neither team was whistled for a penalty in the game.

The same two teams will be back in action tomorrow night against each other at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. It is the final regular season game for both teams. Northeastern (25-6-0, 15-5-0 ECAC Eastern) has already clinched second place in the conference. New Hampshire (18-11-4, 11-6-3) entered tonight’s game tied with Providence for third place. PC finishes the season with a home and home series this weekend with Boston College.
