DURHAM, N.H. –- Northeastern and New Hampshire battled to a 2-2 tie on Friday night at the Whittemore Center in the final regular season game for both teams.

NU is now 25-6-1, 15-5-1, and will host Boston College in the ECAC Eastern Quarterfinals next Friday night at Mathews Arena. UNH is 18-11-5 overall and 11-6-4 in the conference. The Wildcats are third in the league standings with 26 points. Fourth-place Providence has 23 points and needs to sweep the home-and-home series against Boston College to pass the Wildcats in the standings; if the teams end tied, UNH wins the tiebreaker with a 1-0-2 mark vs. the Friars. Regardless, UNH will host a quarterfinal game March 9 at 2 p.m.

Northeastern goalie Chanda Gunn (Huntingt Beach, CA) tied a career-high with 40 saves. UNH goaltender Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.) finished with 24 saves to break the program’s record for career saves.

New Hampshire took a 2-1 lead entering the third period. However, with just over three minutes remaining in regulation, Northeastern’s Brooke Whitney (Snohomish, WA) collected the puck in the neutral zone and fed a centering pass to linemate Nicole Lewis (Peabody, MA). Lewis then eluded two UNH defenders and broke in alone on Huggon and slipped a shot past through the pads to tie the game up.

In overtime, the ‘Cats had several opportunities to pot the game-winner, with Northeastern goalie Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA) making two point-blank saves on Kira Misikowetz (Mississauga, ONT) and another on a Jaime VanMassenhove (Alpena, Mich.) breakaway attempt.

Misikowetz gave Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 9:16 of the first period when she maneuvered past a defenseman in the right circle and fired a wrist shot into the net. Carolyn Gordon (Petrolia, Ont.) initiated the scoring sequence, in which Randi MacMaster (Syracuse, N.Y.) set up Misikowetz with a pass from the right point.

Gordon extended the advantage to 2-0 at 12:14. An NU defenseman lost her balance, and control of the puck, in the slot. Gordon, who was forechecking on the play, corralled the puck and placed a wrist shot in the upper-left corner.

The Huskies faced that 2-0 deficit at the first intermission but made it 2-1 with the only goal of the middle stanza. Whitney scored her team-best 31st goal of the season at 7:53 when her shot from the high slot eluded Huggon.

On Thursday night at Matthews Arena, NU led New Hampshire 1-0 after two periods but lost 2-1 in regulation. The teams split the season series 1-1-1.
