STORRS, CT - The Northeastern women's hockey team downed New Hampshire 2-0 in the ECAC Eastern semifinals at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs, Conn on Friday night. The Huskies advance to the championship game against Providence on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Friars upset top-seed Niagara 3-2 in double-overtime. It was the first time Northeastern had ever shutout New Hampshire in 80 all-time meetings. Sophomore Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA) made 35 saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season, and her second consecutive in the postseason. She also set a new NU record for wins in a season with her 23rd victory of the season. The Huskies improve to 27-6-1 and tie the school record for wins in a season set during the ECAC Championship season in 1996-97. The Huskies got all the scoring they would need just 5:30 into the opening period. Senior Brooke Whitney (Snohomish, WA) broke in front of UNH goalie Jen Huggon (Plymouth, MA) and threw the puck on net. Her shot deflected off a UNH defenders skate and through Huggon's pads for the goal. It was Whitney's 32nd goal of the season and her fourth of the season against the Wildcats. UNH controlled the play in the second period, outshooting the Huskies 18-7. But Gunn was up to the challenge, turning aside each Wildcat shot she faced. With time running out in the second, UNH's Carolyn Gordon (Petrolia, ONT) blasted a wrist shot from the left slot that was stopped by Gunn. Then Stephanie Jones (Kimberley, BC) came right back on a breakaway but Gunn made the save. The rebound came right to Gordon in front, but Gunn smothered Gordon's scoring attempt with under a minute in the second. In the third period, Northeastern did a good job of playing defense through offense by keeping the puck in the UNH end. With time running out, UNH began to try to step up the pressure. A good defensive play by NU however, brought the play back into the Wildcat end with less than two minutes to play. Freshman Lori DiGiacomo (Temecula, CA) centered the puck to junior Michelle Lorion (Mississauga, ONT) whose wrist shot beat Huggon at 18:41 to seal the victory for the Huskies. Northeastern swept the season series from Providence, winning 6-3, 3-2 and 5-1. In the first two meetings, PC jumped out to 2-0 leads only to see NU come back for the victory. Whitney had a hat trick with two shorthanded goals versus the Friars on Feb. 1.
