STORRS, CT - The Northeastern women's hockey team fell in the ECAC Eastern championship game 1-0 to Providence on Saturday night at UConn Ice Arena in Storrs, Conn.
It is Providence's seventh conference championship.
The Friars got all the scoring they would need at 14:19 of the first period. NU defender Pamela Pachal (Saltcoats, SASK) had a pass blocked by PC's Jackie Tamsin (Branford, CT). Tamsin raced in alone on NU goalie Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA) and stuffed the puck between Gunn's pads and into the net for the game's only goal. It was the only goal Gunn allowed in the postseason and the first goal she had allowed in over 197 minutes. She finished the game with 29 saves, and coupled with a 35-save shutout performance in the semifinals, she earned the tournament MVP award.
Northeastern had won the four previous meetings between the two schools, including all three this season. The Huskies averaged over 4.6 goals per game against PC this season, but were stifled by PC's forecheck and defense. The Friars outshot the Huskies 16-2 in the first period and 30-10 for the entire game. NU's 10 shots were a season low.
In the third period, the Huskies tried to increase the pressure, but the PC defense did a great job of limiting Northeastern's chances. The Huskies' best chance of the game came with less than eight minutes left when Brooke White (Berkeley, CA) moved around two Providence defenders and broke in on PC goalie Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, LA). White snapped off a wrist shot but Quinlan was able to grab the puck with the glove save.
NU had another chance when PC was whistled for a penalty at 17:01. The Huskies best chance on the power-play came when Kim Greene (Everett, MA) put a shot on net. The puck was bouncing in front of Quinlan and both Pachal and White had shots at it but neither was able to get off a clean shot.
Providence entered the tournament as the four-seed and knocked off top-seed Niagara and two-seed Northeastern to capture the championship.
Quinlan finished the game with 10 saves for the shutout. PC improves to 20-13-5, while NU drops to 27-7-1.
