CANTON, N.Y. — Brooke Whitney scored two goals and assisted on another to lead Northeastern’s women’s hockey team to a 3-1 win over St. Lawrence University in Appleton Arena on Saturday afternoon.

A day after the Huskies’ Michelle Lorion scored with less than one second remaining in overtime, Northeastern again featured some late-game heroics, although the story was not nearly as dramatic.

Down by a score of 2-1 with less than five minutes to go in the game, the Saints started to pressure Northeastern goaltender Chanda Gunn. Gunn was up to the challenge, stopping the Saints at every opportunity.

Then, with less than two minutes remaining, Lori DiGiacomo recovered a loose puck near the Saints blue line and found Whitney open near the left circle. Whitney skated in towards St. Lawrence goalie Rachel Barrie and scored on a low shot to give Northeastern the final 3-1 margin.

Kim Greene gave Northeastern a 2-1 lead on a hard slap shot from the point less than a minute into the third period. The Huskies outplayed the Saints for the better part of the third period, but were unable to score until Whitney tallied her second of the game.

After a scoreless first period, Christin Powers opened the scoring when she stuffed a rebound past Gunn to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Northeastern tied the game late in the second period when Whitney scored the only power play goal of the game.

Gunn was impressive in net for the second day in a row, making 25 saves on 26 shots. Barrie made 31 saves for the Saints.

Both teams had a number of power play opportunities, but neither took great advantage of them. Northeastern went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Saints were 0-for-8.

The Saints, ranked third in the nation in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Women’s Division I Coaches Poll earlier this week, fall to 2-2-0 on the season, while Northeastern improves to 4-0-0.
