BOSTON, MA – The Northeastern Huskies improved to 6-0-0 on the season with a 5-3 victory over Connecticut on Saturday night at Matthews Arena.
Junior Kim Greene (Everett, MA) led the way with her first career hat trick to go with an assist for a four-point night. Junior Nicole Lewis (Peabody, MA) had a goal and an assist for Northeastern.
Northeastern is 6-0-0 to start a season for the first time since the 1991-92 team began the year 11-0-0.
NU took control of the game in the second period, following a scoreless first. Just 2:28 into the second, Greene scored her first goal of the game, off assists from Lewis and Brooke Whitney (Snohomish, WA). Lewis then put NU on top 2-0 at 7:44 with a power-play goal from inside the right circle. Brooke White (Berkeley, CA) and Danielle Keefe (Everett, MA) assisted on the play. Less than 30 seconds later, Greene added her second goal of the night, putting NU on top 3-0.
Trailing 3-0 entering the third period, Connecticut came back, getting two goals. The first came from Erika Spaeth (Dallas, TX) who scored from in front at 10:06. Then at 11:04, Stefanie Snow (Bedford, NH) cut the margin to 3-2 with a blast from the left point. However, Greene clinched the win for the Huskies with an unassisted 5-x3 goal at 14:09 and freshman Lindsay Ball (Victoria, BC) added some insurance off an assist from Greene at 15:59. UConn’s final goal came at 19:11 of the third and was scored by Laura Stosky (Edmonton, ALB).
Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA) earned her sixth win in net this season, making 25 saves, while Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) had 24 stops for Connecticut.
Northeastern defeated Connecticut in Storrs the previous night, 3-1.
NU next plays on Saturday at home versus Boston College.
