Northeastern took a 2-0 lead in the first period, but couldn't hold on despite a career-high 46 saves by junior Chanda Gunn, as fifth-ranked Providence fired in a Hockey East record five power-play goals en route to a 6-3 victory at Matthews Arena.
Senior Brooke White scored two goals for the Huskies (5-9-2, 1-3-1), while Hilary Greaves and Rush Zimmerman both had two scores for the Friars (10-4-3, 5-0-1). Kelli Halcisak added a goal and four assists for PC.
Although the Huskies were outshot, 19-5, they took a 2-1 advantage into the second period, riding the pads of Gunn. But, the Friars capitalized on three straight power plays in the second stanza to take a 4-2 lead.
In the first period, Nancy Collins, who suited up for the first time this season for NU after recovering from an injury, appeared to put the Huskies on the board first, knocking in a Kathy Sands shot that ricocheted back into play off the post.
Brooke White tallied her second goal of the season skating in from the slot and letting a backhander loose that sailed under PC goalie Jana Bugden's arm to her glove side at 8:39. The power-play goal was assisted by Rebecca Paul.
Despite a Friars' onslaught, the Huskies struck again four minutes later on a four-on-four, when Michelle Lorion picked up a loose puck and then banged home her own rebound for a 2-0 lead at 13:29.
Zimmerman put the Friars on the board at 16:16 of the first, before PC's well executed power play took over. Greaves, Zimmerman, Greaves again, and Halcisak tallied four consecutive power play goals, before White broke up the streak with a breakaway goal at 15:25. Darlene Stephenson rounded out the scoring with a PC power-play strike with 4:35 left in regulation.
Providence outshot Northeastern 52-15 for the game and converted on 5 of 8 power plays. The Huskies went 1 for 3 with a man-advantage.
