New Hampshire senior goaltender Jen Huggon stopped 16 shots to break a school record with her seventh shutout of the season and led sixth-ranked New Hamsphire a 3-0 Hockey East victory against visiting Northeastern at the Whittemore Center.
UNH received two points apiece from Stephanie Jones, Carolyn Gordon and Allison Edgar in improving to 16-3-1 overall and 6-0-0 in conference play. Northeastern is now 5-10-2, 1-4-1.
Huggon extended her career shutout record to 19. Jones gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with her 10th goal of the season, a power-play tally at 5:17 of the first period. She set a screen in front for Gordon's shot from the slot and tucked the rebound into the net. Edgar was also credited with an assist.
Gordon increased the UNH advantage to 2-0 at 14:46 of the opening stanza when she scored on a rebound from the high slot. NU goalie Chanda Gunn (33 saves) stopped initial shots by Jones and Janine Goulet before surrendering the goal to Gordon.
The Wildcats carried that two-goal cushion into the first intermission and led 3-0 at the end of two periods. Debbie Bernhard scored the only goal of the middle frame when she redirected Edgar's slapshot from the right point at 10:51.
UNH continued to control play in the third period and generated an 11-6 advantage in shots. The 'Cats held a 36-16 edge in the game.
New Hampshire and Northeastern conclude the two-game weekend series Saturday night at the Whittemore Center. Game time is 7 p.m.
