Senior Brooke White scored twice and junior Chanda Gunn stopped 26 shots, as Northeastern blanked host Maine, 2-0, in Hockey East action at Alfond Arena.
The Huskies improve to 6-11-2 (2-5-1), while the Black Bears fall to 6-8-4 (1-5-2).
Both teams had some quality scoring chances in the first period, but it was Northeastern who struck first. Brooke White knocked home a rebound off a Lindsay Snider shot at 13:22 of the first to give the Huskies the early 1-0 lead. Lori DiGiacomo also added an assist on White’s tally. Maine kept the offense pressure on, as they outshot NU 13-7 in the period, but Husky goaltender Gunn was up to the task, stopped all 13 Maine shots.
The second period was more back and forth action, with Maine outshooting Northeastern 7-3 in the period. Neither team was able to score, however, as Maine netminder Lara Smart stopped the only three shots she faced and Gunn stood strong to keep her team up 1-0 at the second intermission.
Maine turned up the intensity in the third period, but NU matched Maine’s aggressiveness and held the Black Bears at bay. Still down 1-0, Maine pulled goaltender Smart with 58 seconds remaining in favor of an extra skater, but Brooke White broke out of the zone down the left wing and fired a shot from just outside the blueline into the empty net to ice the game for NU. Northeastern registered eight shots on goal in the period to Maine’s six.
