Northeastern received another stellar performance from junior goalie Chanda Gunn (26 saves), but 10th-ranked Providence overcame a 1-0 deficit for a 3-1 victory in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies fall to 7-13-2 overall and 3-7-1 in the conference, while the Friars improve to 13-5-6 and 8-0-1.
Freshman Rebecca Peters opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 18:29. Peters ripped a shot from the top of the left circle to beat PC netminder Jana Bugden, who had shut out Northeastern the previous day, 2-0. Freshmen Cyndy Kenyon and Theresa Ella assisted on the score.
However, the Husky lead didn’t last long, as the Friars answered 21 seconds later when Kelli Halcisak found the puck in a scrum in front of the net and slipped it past Gunn to tie the game.
Providence opened up the game in the second period. At 10:51, Ashley Payton picked up a loose in the Husky zone and skated in on Gunn uncontested. Gunn thwarted Payton’s first shot, but couldn’t get a glove on the rebound, and the Friars led, 2-1. Six minutes later Sarah Youlen added to the PC lead with a strike at 16:23.
Northeastern’s comeback attempt was stymied by Bugden, who stopped 10 shots in the final stanza. The Huskies outshot the Friars 10-4 in the third.
Gunn, who tied her career-high the previous day with 46 saves, finished the weekend with a .935 save percentage.
