|
Northeastern chalked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout of visiting Vermont at Matthews Arena Sunday afternoon.
The teams played a scoreless first period, which the Huskies dominated, outshooting the Catamounts 15-4. However, UVM goalie Tiffany Hayes seemed up for the challenge.
NU finally lit up the lamp in the 13th minute of the second period. Lindsay Snider stole the puck from a Vermont defender at the Catamounts blue line. Snider then tipped the puck ahead to Brooke White, who rifled a shot toward the net. Pam Pachal deflected the shot past the screened goalie for a 1-0 lead.
After two periods, the Huskies led 1-0, despite outshooting the Catamounts 30-9.
With four minutes remaining in regulation, Theresa Ella received a pass from Cyndy Kenyon at the blueline and blasted a shot into the upper far corner of the net to give NU a 2-0 cusion. Michelle Lorion also assisted on the play and added an insurance empty net goal at 19:42.
Although Chanda Gunn only made 12 saves for the victory, she was tested numerous tiimes. With 2:05 remaining in the second period and the Hukies clinging to a 1-0 lead, Chanda stonewalled UVM's Hilary Johnson on a breakaway.
Northeastern is now 1-2-0, while Vermont dropped to 1-3-0.
