Tiffany Owens scored a breakaway goal with 1:11 remaining in overtime to lift visiting Connecticut to a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena Saturday afternoon.
The NU fell to 1-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Hockey East play, while UConn improves to 3-4 and 1-0 in the league.
Both goalies turned in spectacular performances, each turning away breakaway opportunities. NU netminder Chanda Gunn made 33 saves, while her counterpart, Shannon Murphy stopped 27 shots.
After 23 minutes of scoreless action, NU's Michelle Lorion rocketed a shot past Murphy at 3:41 of the second period to give Northeastern a 1-0 advantage. UConn's Sara Mahoney answered five minutes later to even the score on a breakaway goal.
Both teams were on the defensive in the third period, combining for 11 shots. NU held a 7-4 shot advantage in the third stanza.
In overtime, both teams squandered excellent scoring opportunities and just when the game seemed headed for a tie, UConn's Jennifer Houlden connected with Owens on a long pass. Owens collected the puck in stride and managed to outduel Gunn for the game-winner.
