Northeastern's Stephanie Wood scored with 12:58 left in regulations, as the Huskies and Maine skated to a 1-1 tie in Hockey East action Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.
Northeastern is now 7-3-3 overall and 1-2-2 in Hockey East play, while the Black Bears are 4-7-3 and 3-1-1.
After a scoreless first period, Maine got on the scoreboard when Andrea Steranko stole the puck from a Northeastern defender and fed freshman Sonia Corriveau at 17:58. Corriveau broke in alone on Husky netminder Chandra Gunn (25 saves) and beat her for her fourth goal of the season to give the Black Bears the lead headed into the second intermission.
Northeastern tied the game when Wood tipped a Theresa Ella shot from the blue line at 7:02 of the third period.
Neither team was able to beat the opposing netminder the rest of the game despite some excellent scoring chances. Maine senior forward Meagan Aarts had two short-handed breakaways in the game, but was unable to capitalize on either.
Northeastern held a slim 28-26 advantage in shots on goal. The Huskies went 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Black Bears went 0-for5 with a man-advantage.
The two netminders combined to earn the first two stars of the game as each was outstanding. Lara Smart made 27 saves, including 10 in the third period, and is 4-7-3 on the season. Gunn stopped three of four breakaways in her first start in over a month due to an injury.
The two teams return to action on Sunday, Dec. 7 when they face each other in a rematch starting at 1 p.m. at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.
