Maine's Sonia Corriveau scored the game-winning goal 1:09 into the third period as the Black Bears defeated Northeastern, 2-1, in Hockey East action on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.
Maine improves to 5-7-3 on the season and 4-1-1 in Hockey East play, while Northeastern falls to 7-4-3 and 1-3-2.
Karen Droog opened the scoring for Maine at 9:19 of the second period when she scored her fifth goal of the season on the rebound of a Meagan Aarts shot. Vicky Johnstone also assisted on the goal for the Black Bears. Corriveau gave Maine a 2-0 lead from Andrea Steranko and Brigitte Laflamme early in the third period.
NU sophomore Cyndy Kenyon cut the Maine lead to 2-1 when she scored from Stephanie Wood with 10:32 remaining in the game. Maine was whistled for a penalty with just 2:25 remaining in the game and Northeastern pulled its goaltender with 38 seconds remaining for a brief six-on-four advantage, but Maine netminder Lara Smart and the Black Bears were able to hold off the late Northeastern flurry.
The Black Bears finished with a 25-20 advantage in shots on goal in the game. Smart allowed just one goal for the second game in a row and finished with 19 saves. She improves to 5-7-3 on the season. Chanda Gunn made 23 saves in goal for the Huskies and falls to 2-2-3 on the campaign.
