Freshman Marie Desrosiers scored a breakaway goal with 2:18 remaining in regulation to lift the Huskies to a thrilling, 3-1, victory over Boston College in Hockey East action at Kelley Rink Sunday afternoon.

In the waning minutes of the game with the puck in the NU zone, sophomore Cyndy Kenyon dove to beat a BC player to puck and knocked the puck to Desrosiers. The French Canadian scooped up the puck just over blue line, skated the length of the ice and deked Eagle netminder Lisa Davis (29 saves), slipping the puck under the goalie’s leg pad.

Senior Lori DiGiacomo added an insurance goal with an empty-net, shorthanded goal with 1:08 left in the game. The Huskies improved to 8-5-6 overall and 2-3-2 in Hockey East play, while the Eagles fell to 5-9-2 and 0-6-0.

The penalty-ridden game had 12 power plays with NU going 0-for-5 and BC converting 1-of-7. The Huskies held a slim 32-29 shot advantage, as senior Chanda Gunn made 28 saves for the win.

The teams went into the first intermission tied at 1. BC took a 1-0 lead when Kerri Sanders knocked in a rebound for a power-play goal with 5:54 left in the period. Jen Fischl took the initial shot and was credited with an assist.

The Huskies retaliated quickly, as Kenyon scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season to knot the game at 1 with 2:56 remaining in the first stanza. Ashly Waggoner registered her third assist of the season.

The Huskies were outshot 14-6 in the first stanza, primarily due to skating a man-down half the period with the Eagles going 1-for-5 on power-play opportunities, including 0-for-2 on 5-on-3’s.

The game remained tied after a scoreless second period. The Huskies turned up the pressure and outshot the Eagles, 14-8, over the second 20 minutes. NU failed to convert on two power-play chances.

The Huskies had a 29-second 5-on-3 power play in the third period, but couldn’t capitalize. A few minutes after the BC penalties expired, Gunn robbed BC’s Kristin Blundo on a 2-on-1 breakaway.
