| 2003-04 Schedule/Results Harvard 5, Northeastern 1
Playing in her final Beanpot game, Husky senior captain Chanda Gunn turned away 51 Harvard shots, however the Crimson prevailed 5-1 in the tournament's championship game Tuesday night at Conte Forum. Harvard took home its 10th Beanpot title, second only to Northeastern’s 14, in this 26th installment of the tournament. The Crimson jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:39 into the game when Caitlin Cahow fired in a slapshot from the left point that slipped inside the far-right post and Gunn’s pads. After the goal, Gunn regained her composure and went on to make a remarkable 21 saves in the period. She used a lightning-quick glove, cat-like reflexes and great positioning to keep the Huskies within striking distance. Harvard managed to build a 2-0 lead with a breakaway goal from Angela Ruggerio. The two-time Olympian stole the puck at center ice, cruised into the NU zone uncontested and put a move on Gunn before cutting across the crease and scoring on a backhander at 7:54. After being outshot, 23-2, in the first period, NU came out with renewed intensity and a chip on their shoulder in the second. Five minutes into the period, Jess Coppney almost scored on a breakaway, but Harvard’s Ali Boe was able to make a kick save and keep NU scoreless. Two minutes later, Husky freshman Crystal Rochon just missed finishing on a 2-on-1 breakaway with Mia Mucci. However, Rochon wouldn’t be denied of a score, tallying power-play goal at the 14:12 mark of the second period to draw the Huskies within 2-1. Rochon blasted a shot off Boe, which was knocked in by Harvard defender Ashley Banfield as she tried to clear the puck off the goal line. After two periods, the Crimson held a 38-8 shot advantage. The Huskies were able to win the battle on special teams. NU went 1-for-3 against the nation’s top-ranked penalty-kill unit, while the Husky penalty-kill unit stopped 6-of-7 of the Crimson’s top-ranked power play chances, allowing a 5-on-3 in the last minute of play. Harvard wore down Northeastern in the third period and managed to give itself some breathing room with a goal from Jennifer Raimondi five minutes into the final stanza for a 3-1 edge. Raimondi let loose a quick wrister from the left circle that deflected off Gunn’s shoulder and into the net at 10:30.
