Freshman Ashly Waggoner's first collegiate goal proved to be the game winner, as Northeastern downed visiting Boston College, 2-1, in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena Saturday afternoon.

Senior Chanda Gunn turned in a 28-save effort, as the Huskies improved to 11-7-7 overall and 5-4-3 in Hockey East play. Sophomore netminder Lisa Davis stopped 35 shots for the Eagles, who fall to 5-14-4 and 0-10-1.

Waggoner netted the game winner at the 9:06 mark of the second period. She intercepted an attempted clear at the BC blue line then blasted in a shot from the point that may have benefitted from a deflection.

BC jumped out to a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game, when Kerri Sanders lifted a rebound over Gunn's shoulder at 7:59 of the first period. Michelle Lombardi took the initial shot, while Sarah Courtney was also credited with an assist.

The Huskies responded with a late first-period, power-play strike from Theresa Ella. Crystal Rochon cycled the puck from the corner to Becky Peters at the right point. Peters slid a pass to Ella in the slot, who ripped a slapshot past Davis with 1:33 remaining in the first period.

Although the teams were knotted at 1 heading into the first intermission, Northeastern held a 13-6 shot advantage.

The Eagles mounted a furious rally in the final five minutes of play, but couldn't convert on a power play or with the goalie pulled for the final minute of action. Gunn made six saves at close range to preserve the win.

The Huskies went 1-for-3 with a man-advantage and killed off all three Eagle power-play opportunities.

The teams meet again Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum (2 p.m.).
