| 2003-04 Schedule/Results No. 8 New Hampshire 2, Northeastern 0
Northeastern senior goalie Chanda Gunn turned away 43 shots in her final regular-season game at Matthews Arena, but eighth-ranked New Hampshire found the back of the net twice in the final seven minutes of play for a 2-0 Hockey East victory Saturday afternoon. UNH freshman Sadie Wright-Ward finished off a pass from junior Stephanie Jones on a 2-on-1 breakaway with 6:15 remaining for the game winner. Gunn's attention was on Jones, who slid the puck across to the far post, and Gunn couldn't recover in time, as Wright-Ward tucked the puck inside the post. UNH senior Carolyn Gordon scored a breakaway goal with 4:41 left in the game to seal the victory. UNH freshman goalie Melissa Bourdon stopped 15 shots in goal for her sixth shutout of the season. The teams will meet again next Saturday at Matthews Arena in the Hockey East semifinals at 4 p.m. UNH, which improved to 22-8-4 overall and 17-1-2 in Hockey East play, is the top seed, while NU, which is now 13-12-8 and 7-9-4 is the fourth seed. Second-seed and defending champion Providence plays third-seeded Maine at 1 p.m. Gunn tied her record of saves in a period with 23 stops over the first 20 minutes to keep the game scoreless. She set the record Jan. 10 with 23 saves in the third period in a 1-1 tie with fourth-ranked Wisconsin in Lakewood, Calif. The Wildcats outshot the Huskies, 23-6, in the first stanza. NU successfully killed off three UNH power plays in the first period, including a 41-second 5-on-3. The play was more balanced in the second period with both teams getting quality scoring opportunities, however, both goalies stood their ground and the game remained a scoreless tie through 40 minutes of action. The Wildcats held a 14-6 shot advantage in the middle period and a 37-12 edge at the end of two. Freshman Amy Goodney almost scored on a quick wrist shot from the slot on a Husky power play in the second period, but Bourdon robbed her with a glove save. With six seconds remaining on the same NU man-advantage, UNH senior Carolyn Gordon was stopped by Gunn on a shorthanded breakaway with 7:04 remaining before second intermission. Just over a minute later, Gunn stoppped UNH sophomore Lindsay Hansen on a 2-on-1 breakaway. NU’s best chance to get on the scoreboard in the second cmae with 3:10 left before the break. Husky sophomore defenseman Theresa Ella collected a drop pass on a 3-on-2 rush and snapped a shot of Bourdon’s pads. Ella tried to stuff the rebound past Bourdon, but the netminder thwarted her efforts.
