Northeastern dropped their third hockey east contest against Maine on Friday night despite an amazing performance by goaltender Marisa Hourihan. The win brought Maine's record to 5-5-2 on the season. This was Maine's first victory in Hockey East play.

Maine came out firing in the first period out shooting the Huskies 15-4 in the first stanza. Cheryl White put Maine on the scoreboard with an even strength goal just over 4 minutes into the game. Andrea Steranko moved the puck to Kelly Law who saw her opportunity and put the shot on net. Hourihan was up to the task and denied Law's shot but could not control the rebound which went to White for the first goal of the game.

Maine was able to push the score to 2-0 early in the second period with Tristan Desmet's unassisted goal 49 seconds in. Northeastern had several opportunities to score in the period with 3 power plays. Sophomore Marie Desrosiers had a great scoring chance midway through the period but was denied by Maine goalie Rachel Gettings. Less than a minute with Northeastern on a power play Lindsay Snider unleashed a slap shot that Gettings could not handle. The puck bounced to a wide-open Nikki Petrich who recorded her sixth goal of the season. The score remained the same as Maine headed into the third period with a one-goal lead.

Unfortunately for the Huskies they were killed with penalties in the third stanza being whistled for four infractions. Hourihan did an amazing job keeping NU in the game stopping 20 shots in the period. With Maine on a 5-3 advantage Hourihan made several diving saves including one while on her back. The Huskies offense managed only four shots on goal for the period and could not make up the one goal deficit. Maine's Kate Sunstrum added an insurance goal late in the third period bringing the final to 3-1.

The referees were busy for the night with both teams called for eight penalties for 16 minutes. Northeastern was able to stop all of Maine's power play opportunities and converted one of their own.

Marisa Hourihan finished with 42 saves on the night including her 20 saves in the third period. Hourihan has now stopped 40 or more saves in six games this season.

With Lindsay Snider's assist in the second period she becomes the leading scorer among defensemen on the Huskies squad with a line of 0-4-4.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow at Matthews Arena. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 pm.
