The NU women’s hockey team came back and erased a two-goal deficit in the third period, but could not hold on in the final minutes against BC. BC’s Sarah Courtney scored the game-winner on a 2-on-1 breakaway with 1:28 left to play to lift the Eagles to a 4-3 win. The loss drops NU to 2-15-1 overall and 1-6-0 in Hockey East. BC improves to 6-11-3 overall and 2-6-2 in Hockey East.

BC started off strong on the offense taking shot after shot on NU goalie Marisa Hourihan. Deborah Spillane set up Sarah Feldman who shot it through the net for an uncontested goal just three minutes into the game.

NU picked it up after a penalty on Spillane for body checking, but did not enjoy a full power play due to having too many players on the ice. The period ended with BC up 1-0 and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.

In the second period, BC’s Spillane scored a power play goal at 9:55 after Missy Elumba was called off for tripping. But Amy Goodney got one back for NU moments later off a nice feed from Nikki Petrich just 31 seconds after the Spillane goal.

Spillane capped off her number one star of the game honor when she garnered her second goal and third point of the game a few minutes later. BC went into the second intermission with a 3-1 edge. The Huskies played better and were out shot just 9-6.

NU came into the third period fired up and scored two straight goals to knot the game at 3-3. NU capitalized on their first power play of the period and made the score 3-2 when Ashley Bielawski scored her third goal of the season from the right side. Lori DiGiacomo and Marie Desrosiers set her up.

Almost five minutes later, Jennifer Beaudoin sent the puck to Stephanie Wood on the left side. She took the puck behind the left side of the goal and made a perfect dish backwards to Desrosiers who pounded the puck in to knot the game at 3-3. The Huskies had a golden opportunity a few minutes later, but Kathryn Sands got tripped up as she was shooting.

But BC came back with a 2-on-1 breakaway and stuck it past Hourihan’s glove side. Feldman and Kerri Sanders eventually set up Courtney who shot a slapper into the net.

NU pulled Hourihan and took a penalty on a Spillane body check in the BC zone. With a 6-on-3 advantage, NU won a face-off in BC territory with seven seconds to go. DiGiacomo took a shot that was blocked by a BC defender and the game ended in BC’s favor, 4-3.

The first forward line has accounted for over half of the points this season, but the second line of Wood, Desrosiers, and Sands really stepped it up today. Led by Desrosiers, they accounted for three points, the most of any forward lines.

“I thought we played a good second and third period,” said Head Coach Laura Schuler after the game. “We had a rough start in the first period and we clearly did not show up. But I was really happy with how they decided to come together and play like they are capable of playing for the second and third. They showed up and I was really happy with that. I was really happy with the comeback, but we just fell short.”

The women’s hockey team will face off tomorrow again with BC at Matthews Arena at 2 p.m. Captain DiGiacomo gave some insight on what the team will look to do to bag the team’s first ‘w’ of the new year.

“We need to play all three periods and go hard all the way through. (We need to) be the first to the puck, put the puck on net, and do all the little things right. Most importantly, we need to play 60 minutes of hockey.”
