| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Northeastern 3, Boston College 1
The women's hockey team played one of their best games of the season and defeated Boston College this afternoon by a score of 3-1. The win ended a nine-game losing streak and raises their record to 3-15-1 (2-6-0 in Hockey East). Ashley Bielawski scored two more goals in today's game and had three on the weekend to lead the offensive attack. Lori DiGiacomo added a goal and an assist. The Huskies came out much stronger today to start the second game of the weekend vs. BC. They took 11 of the first 13 shots on goal and scored just 4:27 into the contest on a power play. Bielawski had her fourth goal of the season with assists from Missy Elumba and Lori DiGiacomo. BC answered right back another four minutes later. Captain Sarah Carlson came in on the left side and took a 180-degree shot on net. Instead of sailing wide, it hit off NU goalie Marisa Hourihan and into the net to tie the score at 1-1. That was the end of the scoring in the first period with NU outshooting BC 13-9. BC dominated the second period and outshot NU 18-6, but could not penetrate through the NU defense, and most importantly, Hourihan. After several failed attempts by the Eagles, the Huskies looked to get something going With a 5-on-3 advantage with under two minutes left in the period. NU appeared to have taken the lead 2-1 after NU shot the puck past BC goalie Alison Quant. However, the goal was called back because of a high stick. The period ended the way it started ... a 1-1 stalemate. The third period was played more even, but it was Northeastern who came out of it with points. After getting another goal called back, NU scored two more goals to seal the victory. Lori DiGiacomo scored her third goal of the season on a power play 5:08 into the period with assists coming from Amy Goodney and Crystal Rochon. Bielawski put the icing on the cake with her second goal of the game from Rochon again just a minute later. NU neverlooked back. Captain DiGiacomo went on to say that yesterday they did not start the game ready to play, but today, they did. "Today we came out hard from the get-go," explained captain DiGiacomo. "We started off strong and got shots on net right away. We got a few penalties and that was a bit of a set-back. Besides that, we were just going to the net, putting the puck on net, and we just really wanted it and worked hard the entire game." Depth was always a big question for the Huskies entering the 2004-05 season. In the first half of the season before the holiday break, it was only the first line of Crystal Rochon, Amy Goodney, and Nikki Petrich doing all the scoring. This weekend, the second and third lines of Stephanie Wood, Marie Desrosiers, Kathryn Sands, Ashley Bielawski, Missy Elumba, and Jessica Copney combined for four goals and three assists. "The first half of the season was a rough time for us," stated assistant captain Theresa Ella. "We had a very tough schedule. After Christmas, I think everyone has come back refreshed. Yesterday we played pretty well, but did not come up with the win. Today we did. Ashley Bielawski stepped up her game immensely since last semester and that is going to help us out a lot. The confidence on (her) line as well as on our other lines (is really up)." The defense has been much more successful this weekend. Husky opponents averaged over 39 shots a game before this weekend, but the Northeastern defensive unit led by DiGiacomo, Jennifer Beaudoin, Lindsay Snider, and Chrissy Sands only gave up an average of 30.5 shots a game against BC. And Hourihan stopped 56 of 61 shots for a 91.8 save percentage. Beaudoin explained that the team's success here is the entire team keeping their opponent away from their goal, and not just the two defenders on the ice. Said Beaudoin about the team's increased productivity this weekend, "I think everyone is just stepping up and playing (our opponent) before they can get in our end a lot more. We are being more aggressive so they do not get (their) shots off. Our forwards are coming back and helping us a lot. It is the forwards backing up and the defense realizing that we can't let 50 shots go on Marisa every day and expect to win games." The Huskies still stand in sixth place in Hockey East (4 points), but they are only one point behind fifth place Connecticut (5 points) and two points behind third place teams Boston College and Maine (6 points each). So the Huskies are very much a part of the Hockey East playoff race. The play of the team on defense is better than last semester. The confidence on all the lines is better than last semester. Goalie Marisa Hourihan's .918 save percentage in 2005 is better than her .891 save percentage last semester. And the team will only perform better as the season goes on. The light to the Hockey East Playoffs (a top 4 finish) is at the FRONT of the tunnel for the Huskies. Next weekend the women's ice hockey team has a home-and-home series with Providence College. The Friars have been in and out of the national polls this season and should provide tougher competition than the Huskies saw this weekend against BC. Goodney gave her insight as the team prepares for the upcoming weekend. "This win is definitely going to carry over into practice and into next weekend. Right now we are all excited and everyone's pumped up. We're going to have a strong week of practice. We have not faced Providence (yet), but we are going to go in confident and think that we are going to get the win." Boston College (6-12-3, 2-7-2 HE) vs. Northeastern (3-15-1, 2-6-0 HE)
