Northeastern lost a heartbreaker tonight to Providence, one of the toughest teams nationally, 3-2, in overtime. Amy Goodney scored both goals for Northeastern. Marisa Hourihan set a NU single game record with 57 saves on the night (.950 save percentage).

Providence remains unbeaten in Hockey East with a 7-0-1 record to complement their overall record of 12-6-4. Northeastern falls to 2-8-0 in Hockey East and 3-17-1 overall.

Both teams had their chances in the first period, but nobody would capitalize as the first period ended in a scoreless tie. the Friars had the upper hand in shots, 15-9.

Providence came out hungry in the second and scored just 42 seconds into the period. Rush Zimmerman and Karen Thatcher assisted on the goal capitalized by Katelynn Laffin. The Friars fired 17 shots on net to the Huskies' five, but only had one goal to show for it and a slim 1-0 lead after the second.

The Friars fired several shots on net to begin the third period, but it was NU's Goodney who scored the next goal to tie the game up at 1-1. PC would then take over the game again firing shot after shot on Hourihan. Laffin eventually found her way through the NU goalie for her second goal of the game to give her team a 2-1 lead with 3:30 left in the game.

Northeastern responded by pulling Hourihan to gain a 6-on-5 advantage. Schuler's call of the game proved to be successful. DiGiacomo stole the puck and chipped it up to Goodney who had a break-away. Before the Friars knew what happened, the game was tied 2-2. Providence had another surge and fired three shots on Hourihan in the final five seconds ... to no avail. Overtime was coming with the game tied at 2-2.

After a Husky player was called off for roughing, Providence had a power play and made the most of it. Rachel Crissy scored the game-winner on a scramble in front of the net at 2:02. One of the biggest dogfights the Huskies put on all season and clearly the most exciting was lost. Thatcher and Zimmermann each assisted on the game-winner.

The Huskies begin their second half of the Hockey East schedule this weekend in a home-and-home series with UConn. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. with the teams playing at Matthews Arena on Friday night and at Storrs on Saturday.

Captain DiGiacomo and the team will go into the weekend feeling very confident.

"We (feel we) are a better team than UConn, all out," said DiGiacomo. "We have more speed, more depth, and we CAN beat them. We just have to play our game. "
