| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Connecticut 2, Northeastern 1
It was another strong effort put forth by the NU Huskies, but they fell short by a goal for the second consecutive game, 2-1, to UConn. All of the goals were scored in the second period. Jessica Coppney scored the NU goal and Marisa Hourihan added another 42 saves to her national leading total. UConn moves up past idle Maine in the Hockey East standings with nine points (4-4-1) and an overall record of 8-10-5 while Northeastern stays in sixth place (2-9-0) with an overall record of 3-18-1. The first period was a tight checking game. Both teams had their fair chances to score, but goalies Hourihan and Kaitlyn shain for UConn held their own in net. Five penalties were called and UConn outshot NU 15-8. The second period featured all the scoring the teams would see, and it all happened in a course of under five minutes. UConn went on a 5-on-3 power play at 7:45 for too many players on the ice, and smothered Hourihan with shots. After Northeastern gained a player but was still down 5-on-4, the Huskies of Connecticut finally found a way through Hourihan. Freshman Britney Chandler scored the first goal of her collegiate career to give her team a 1-0 lead at 9:17. Just over two minutes later, Ashley Bielawski fired a shot on UConn's Shain. The puck bounced off Shain and Coppney shot the puck in for her second goal of the season to quickly tie the game at 1-1. Bielawski was credited the assist at 11:29. UConn had the answer at 14:02 to take the lead for good. Jaclyn Hawkins, only a freshman but the club's top scorer, had a break-away. She looked like she was getting tripped up, but she was still able to chip the puck past Hourihan through the five hole. The Connecticut Huskies had the high hand in shots at 20-11 for the period. Northeastern outshot UConn in the third period, 13-9, but Shain was "in the zone" and kept the goal closed the rest of the game. She withstood a Northeastern charge in the final minutes of the game when Schuler pulled Hourihan and that was it. "We just need to figure out what to do earlier (in the game), start pressuring earlier in the game and not wait for the last period." said freshman Missy Elumba, who had one of her best performances of the season in the game. NU will have a rematch to get even with UConn tomorrow in Storrs, Conn. at 7 p.m. "We need to (continue to) throw the puck at the net and get as many shots as we can," stated Elumba. Northeastern attempted a total of 63 shots and 32 of them reached the goalie. This is easily one of their highest totals in shots attempted this season. If more of them go in tomorrow night, NU could find themselves tied for fifth place in Hockey East with idle Boston College. The top four teams qualify for the Hockey East tournament.
