The Huskies once again challenged another Hockey East team down to the final seconds, but unfortunately had to settle for another loss. The Black Bears of Maine had two power play goals, and came out on top of the Huskies by a score of 3-2.
Nikki Petrich and Stephanie Wood had the goals for NU. Maine was powered by Tristan Desmet's two goals, including the game winner, and Sonia Corriveau's power play goal and assist. Marisa Hourihan had 38 saves in the losing effort.
The win leaped the Black Bears over BC into fourth place in Hockey East with 10 points. The Huskies remain in sixth place with six points.
The Black Bears came out with the greatest force in the first period. They outshot the Huskies, 23-4, and tallied a goal as well. Desmet had her first goal on a power play at 4:42 from Cheryl White. The Huskies luckily trailed only 1-0 after the period thanks to 22 saves by Hourihan.
The teams played a much more even battle in the second period. Each team tallied a goal, and the Huskies outshot the Black Bears, 5-4. Corriveau added to Maine's lead with her eight goal of the season at 8:05. With a total of five power play opportunities in the second period alone, the Huskies were able to pull within a goal. Petrich scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season. Amy Goodney and Crystal Rochon assisted on the play. The period ended with the Black Bears holding a 2-1 lead.
Assistant captain Wood tied the game up just 4:45 into the second period to make things interesting again, with assists from Jessica Copney and Kathryn Sands. But Maine had the last word, as Desmet shot in the game winner at 12:14, her second goal of the game. Corriveau was credited with the assist. The Black Bears peppered Hourihan with several great scoring chances, but the NU netminder did more than anyone could ask for. Unfortunately, the Huskies could not put another goal in and the game ended in Maine's favor, 3-2.
The teams sqaure off again in Maine on Saturday at noon. The Huskies will be looking for a weekend split, and possibly come home just one point behind BC pending the Eagles/Friars series results.
