| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Maine 5, Northeastern 0
The Black Bears of Maine used a three-goal second period to propel themselves to a 5-0 win over the Huskies. Nine Black Bears registered points, and five different playes scored. Julie Poulin led the way with a goal and an assist, and Daniel Tangredi had her first career assist. Rachel Gettings recorded her fourth shutout of the year, while Marisa Hourihan of NU made 29 saves in net and gave up four goals. Bridgitte Laflamme put in a rebound off a shot by Laura Maddin to put Maine up, 1-0. The Black Bears outshot the Huskies, 10-5, and kept NU from getting any good scoring opportunities. The lead was only 1-0 for Maine going into the first intermission. Maine came out roaring with two more goals in the opening three minutes of the second period. Just 32 seconds into the period, an NU player was called off for hooking. Kate Sunstrum wasted no time doubling the lead for the Black Bears. Sunstrum scored the second goal with assists from Karine Senecal and Maddin at 1:11. Top scorer Tristan Desmet scored at 2:58 from Cheryl White, and there was no looking back after that. They got their fourth goal from Kelly Law at 17:08, and the Huskies were looking up at a four goal mountain at the second intermission. The Black Bears had almost half of their shots in the game to go along with their three goals in the second period, and outshot the Huskies, 16-4. There was no quit shown by the Huskies in the third period, but they could not put the puck in the net. They were outshot only 8-7, and Maine's only goal came on an empty netter at 19:10. After the holiday break, the Huskies were playing all of their Hockey East opponents close, including No. 8 UNH and No. 10 Providence. This was the first time they were clearly dominated for a full 60 minutes by a Hockey East opponent in 2005. BC defeated Providence today, and the Eagles and Black Bears face off twice next weekend. The Huskies took five of a possible eight points from BC, but were swept by the Black Bears and came up with no points. If BC loses to Providence Sunday, takes three points from Maine next weekend, and gets swept by UNH in the final weekend, they will finish with 14 points. If Maine takes one point from BC, and then gets swept by Connecticut, then they will finish with 13 points. Northeastern would have to win all four of their remaining games against UConn and Providence to finish with 14 points. If all of this happens, Northeastern and BC will be in a tie for fourth place. The first tie-breaker is head-to-head results. Therefore, Northeastern would get the tournament bid because they took five of a possible eight points from BC. But the Huskies can only qualify for the playoffs if they are tied with BC and have 14 points. Again, they need to win all four of their remaining games for this to happen along with lots of luck from opponent matchups. The light to the Hockey East playoffs is still on, but it is getting very dim. NU will try and get those first two wins needed to qualify for the playoffs next weekend in a home-and-home series with UConn. Saturday's game is at UConn, and Sunday's game is at Matthews Arena. both games are scheduled for 2 p.m.
