The UConn Huskies proved that they were the top dogs in Hockey East on Saturday afternoon, and defeated Northeastern by a score of 4-1. Jaclyn Hawkins had her second hat trick in as many games vs. NU, and Ashley Bielawski had NU's goal. Marisa Hourihan had a 34-save effort for the black and red. UConn outshot NU, 38-21, for the game.
UConn improves to 13-11-7 on the season (9-5-3 in Hockey East), while NU drops to 3-23-3 overall (2-13-2 in Hockey East), and out of playoff contention.
The first period showed both squads getting plagued by penalties. However, neither team could capitalize on their power play opportunities. There was even some time where the teams played 3-on-3. Nikki Petrich had NU's greatest scoring opportunity with under six minutes left to play, but could not fake out UConn goalie, Shain, coming in from the right side. The first finished scoreless with UConn holding the shooting edge, 10-5.
UConn broke the game open, 2-0, in the second period. Freshman and top scorer, Jaclyn Hawkins, opened things up with an unassisted goal just out of the right side of the crease at only 3:13. Angie Wallace made her senior day extra special when she tallied UConn's second goal at 12:25 from Hawkins. NU would have an answer at 15:27. Lori DiGiacomo and Amy Goodney found Ashley Bielawski on the blue line in their own zone. The ice was clear all the way to the goal, and that is the route Bielawski took all the way down the right corner. She drilled the puck in the net far side before Shain could respond. NU fought off a 5-on-3, and the teams went into the second intermission with the hometown Huskies up, 2-1.
NU would not give up in the third period. Amidst six more penalties combined by the two teams, they racked up almost half of their shots in the game in the third period. Unfortunately, they could not get the puck past hot goalie Shain. Hawkins had two power play goals with assists from Natalie Vibert, twice, and Tiffany Owens and Shannon Connolly. Hourihan was pulled for 2:52 to give NU an extra player, but the team could not capitalize on their opportunities.
The two teams meet at Matthews Arena on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. UConn holds a five-to-one edge in points in head-to-head match-ups this season.
