| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Northeastern 1, Connecticut 1 (OT)
Stephanie Wood was the hero this afternoon, as the Northeastern Huskies tied No. 10 UConn, 1-1. It was Wood's goal with 12 seconds left in regulation that sent the game into overtime and salvaged a tie for the team. Marisa Hourihan saved 42 of 43 shots in goal. Her .977 save percentage was a personal best in Hockey East play. The teams combined for 20 minutes of penalties in the first two periods. However, neither team could capitalize on their scoring chances. The first two periods were entirely defensive, and the score was 0-0 after two intermissions. Hourihan and Shain in net both appeared to be unbreakable. The offenses broke out in the third period. 32 of the 65 shots on goal in regulation were taken in the third frame. UConn howled first at 7:05 when they were short-handed. Connecticut's Megan McLeod appeared to have a break-away opportunity. NU's Missy Elumba was right on her in the center of the ice heading into the NU zone. It appeared as though Elumba had broken up the play. The puck slowly rolled towards Hourihan, who fumbled the puck, but had it pass her for a fluky UConn goal. With 2:30 left, Hourihan was pulled to give NU an extra player on the ice. Marie Desrosiers took a slap shot from the right corner of the blue line, and Wood redirected the puck into the net. Coming into the past weekend with two goals on the season, Wood has scored two of the last three NU goals. Both Desrosiers and Wood are natural forwards. Due to a shortage of defensemen, Desrosiers and Wood went out of their comfort zone, and dropped back to defense for the game. While the tandem played a major role to hold UConn to only one goal on 43 shots, they were still able to contribute to the offense. "We could not have asked for a better performance from the team," said assistant coach Linda Lundrigan after the game. "Our 27 shots attempted is more than we average per game. That was what created excitement for us to stay in their end and keep our momentum going. Staying out of the box (at the end of) the third period ultimately led to us tieing it up." NU will face Providence College to close out the regular season in a home-and-home series next weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be Lori DiGiacomo day, as the team's head captain and only senior will be recognized for her efforts over the past four seasons. The teams play in Providence on Sunday. Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m. Providence leads the season series, 2-0. The Friars had a comeback victory, 3-1, in Providence. Providence defeated NU at Matthews Arena, 3-2, in overtime. In that game, Marisa Hourihan broke a school record with 57 saves. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
