| 2004-05 Schedule/Results #9 Providence 5, Northeastern 4 (OT)
Providence was down 3-1 early in the second period. However, the ninth-ranked Friars stood their ground and did not back down. They scored three unanswered goals, and after an up-and-down battle for both teams, the Friars ended the game victorious over the Huskies, 5-4, in overtime. It was the second straight time the Huskies took PC to overtime and came up short. Kathleen Smith scored the game-winner 50 seconds into overtime. Four different Huskies scored for the black and red. Kathryn Sands, Nikki Petrich, Crystal Rochon, and Missy Elumba all found the strings behind PC's Amy Thomas. Elumba's goal came with an extra player on the ice at 17:48 into the third period to send the game into overtime. Providence continues their run for the Hockey East regular season title with a 13-4-2 league record (18-10-5 overall), while Northeastern drops to 2-14-4 in Hockey East and 3-24-4 overall. Before the Huskies would manage a shot on net, PC's Karen Thatcher scored her first of two goals at just 3:46 on a power play. She was assisted by Rush Zimmermann and Kristen Gugliotti. Kathryn Sands would score the first of three unanswered Husky goals. She was assisted by Ashley Bielawski and Lori DiGiacomo, who was playing in her final game at Matthews Arena. Petrich took a pass in the NU zone from Amy Goodney and nearly went to coast to coast down the left sideline for the Huskies second goal at 14:41. She brought the puck right outside the crease and completely faked Thomas out to give her squad a 2-1 lead going into the intermission. The Friars outshot NU, 14-7. The Huskies came out feisty in the second period, and Crystal Rochon wasted no time to add to the NU lead. She slipped the puck past Thomas just outside the right crease. Missy Elumba and Kathryn Sands were credited with assists. Shorthanded, Rush Zimmermann would have an answer. The Friars cleared tnhe puck after a face-off in their own zone. Marisa Hourihan in goal stopped the puck and appeared to leave the puck for a teammate instead of cover it up and force a face off. Zimmermann was the only player to receive it, and she swinged behind the net and dumped the puck in past Hourihan without any Huskies on that half of the ice for support. The teams would go into the second intermission with the Huskies leading, 3-2. The two most unimportant scores in ice hockey are the scores at each of the two intermissions. The Friars obviously knew that, and they scored two more goals in the opening 7:07 of the third period to take a 4-3 lead. Thatcher had her second goal of the game at 2:32, and Hilary Greaves would net her ninth goal of the season. With 2:26 left to play in the game, Northeastern pulled Hourihan out of the goal. For the second straight time dating back to UConn last weekend, the Huskies knotted the score. Elumba scored only 14 seconds after Hourihan went off to prove a point that the Huskies were still here to finish their season with a bang. While she is only a freshman on paper, she sure did not play like one under the pressure. Elumba shot the puck past Thomas from the right side just outside the crease. Goodney and Jennifer Beaudoin were credited for setting her up. The teams went into overtime all tied up at 4-4, even though shots favored the Friars, 37-19. The Friars must have heard that UNH defeated BC, 10-2, to gain a two-point edge over them in the Hockey East Standings. PC won the opening face-off of overtime and kept the puck in the NU zone until Smith would score the game winner. She took a slap shot from the left corner just in front of the blue line through traffic. Greaves and Rachel Crissy were given assists, and just like that, the Friars and Wildcats remained in a stalemate with 28 points each in Hockey East play with one day left in the regular season. The Hockey East has its four teams for the women's playoffs next weekend. Providence, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Boston College have all qualified. This is BC's first time ever competing in the three-year history of the league. NU is out of playoff contention, but will look to end the season on a positive note and a win Sunday afternoon at Providence. Providence will be playing for the regular season title. Should PC and UNH tie for first place, PC has the head-to-head advantage. So both teams will look to come into Sunday's game full-swing with lots on the line for both of them. Congratulations to Lori DiGiacomo, who played her final game at Matthews Arena this afternoon. Only the sixth Husky to captain the team for two years, DiGiacomo was acknowledged for her fabulous four-year career by her teammates, coaches, staff, and the six members of the Providence senior class before the game. DiGiacomo was the only senior on this year's squad, and therefore senior day was known to be "Lori DiGiacomo Day" as displayed on the shirts given out with her picture in the middle. She will play in her final game in a Husky uniform tomorrow afternoon in Providence. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
