| 2004-05 Schedule/Results Providence 2, Northeastern 1
The Huskies ended their season with a 2-1 loss at No. 9 Providence College on Sunday afternoon. Jessica Coppney scored NU’s goal and Marisa Hourihan had 51 saves in 53 tries. PC’s Karen Thatcher had a goal and an assist, including the short-handed game-winner with 1:36 left to play. The PC win gave the Friars their second Hockey East regular season championship in the league’s three-year history. Northeastern finished their season at 3-25-4 and a 2-15-3 record in Hockey East. Providence dominated the first period, and outshot the Huskies, 19-6. But they had nothing to show for it thanks to a defense led by Lori DiGiacomo, playing in her final game, and Marisa Hourihan in net. NU did not have any golden scoring opportunities, and they dodged a bullet “matrix-style” with under a minute left to play in the period. Hourihan denied the laws of human anatomy again and stopped three money shots in a row on the same play. The Friar faithful were standing and beginning their cheer for a goal, but were only silenced by Hourihan’s prowess. The period ended with the teams scoreless. Ashley Bielawski had two break-away opportunities, one of them short-handed, but goalie Amy Thomas would not allow her former teammate to spoil her senior day on both tries. The Huskies fought off a 5-on-3 and had one of their own. The Huskies took a 1-0 lead on a Jessica Coppney goal from Nikki Petrich and Jennifer Beaudoin. She had an open net to look at from just outside the left crease with a 5-on-3 advantage. Providence got BOTH of their girls in the penalty box back after the NU goal, and used their extra time of even strength to keep the puck in the NU zone. In what almost looked like a mirror image of the game-winner a day earlier, Rush Zimmermann fired a slap shot from far out in the left corner over the left shoulder of Hourihan to tie the game up at 1-1. Emily Gryp and Karen Thatcher were credited with assists. Providence outshot Northeastern 21-11 in the period and held a 23-shot advantage at the second intermission. After being outshout by a 3:1 ratio, the Huskies turned it up in the final ten minutes of regulation. Goodney, who has been due for a goal, could not outsmart Thomas on a deflected shot taken by Missy Elumba, who also had many opportunities throughout the game. With 4:19 left, it was announced that UNH defeated BC, 2-1, and Providence could not settle for a tie for the Hockey East title. Taking a penalty with 2:07 left in the game, Karen Thatcher made her senior day extra special by breaking away from the NU defense and faking out Hourihan one-on-one. The goal, which would be the game-winner, was assisted by Kathleen Smith, and gave Providence the regular season title in Hockey East for the second time in the three-year history of the women’s league. They have a date with Boston College on Saturday in the semifinals at noon. Northeastern will look forward to next season to improve on their 3-25-4 mark. Schuler will have her first recruiting class in to help out. Lori DiGiacomo played in her final game this afternoon in a Husky uniform. Her teammates only had praises to give their captain, and explained why she was the best captain in Hockey East. “She was the best captain because of the situation we were in when we came into this year,” said assistant captain Stephanie Wood. “The whole summer we did not have a coach. She still kept the team together and kept everyone in touch and informed of what was going on. She definitely stepped up and really matured this year. She really came through more than ever just because we needed somebody more than ever with the situation we were in.” “Even though we had a really rough season, Lori always got revved up for the (next) game, and she had a lot of faith in us,” said Sarah Belliveau. “She went crazy as often as possible and just gave everything she had all the time.” “No other captain in Hockey East was asked at the beginning of the year to take on a different role and go back to defense the way Lori did,” said Jennifer Beaudoin. “She did it, and she did it well. She did it without complaints and stepped up in a big way when we needed her to, and that helped us a lot this year.” “Lori wanted to be the best, and she did everything she could to be the best,” added Belliveau. “She is the best.” “She was a great leader on and off the ice,” said assistant captain Amy Goodney. "She always gave 110 percent. She’s always encouraging everyone to do their best. Lori is always positive and optimistic. She was great at organizing us as a team and getting people together. She (helped) organize fundraisers we had to do, or even organized a whole fundraiser.” Marisa Hourihan had an amazing year, and finished the season leading the nation in saves with 1235. That shattered the previous record of 858 held by Erika Silva. She would have to be a front-runner for Hockey East Goalie of the Year, and her teammates explained why. Marisa Hourihan was the best goalie in Hockey East “because she makes the most saves every game,” said Crystal Rochon. “She is like a cat,” said captain Lori DiGiacomo. “Arm goes up, legs go out, and (she) has quick reactions.” “She saves us from a lot of games that could have gotten way out of hand,” added Rochon. Without further ado, the coaching duo of Laura Schuler and Linda Lundrigan also were amazing this year. Teammates, classmates, and close friends in college at Northeastern (they can be found in the back row standing next to each other in the 1992-93 team photo), the two of them were the best fit for the 2004-05 NU program and the best in Hockey East at their job according to the players. “(They) have been great because they both went here and know exactly what position we are in,” said Ashley Bielawski. “Laura has a good knowledge of the game from playing with the Canadian team in the Olympics. She’s young, and I think she looks good and ready for a fresh start (next season).” “I thought they were absolutely awesome,” said DiGiacomo. “Both relate to the players well, they both played college hockey, and they both know how everything was like. They took an interest in our lives on and off the ice, and it makes you feel like part of a team and part of a family. I think that is the most important thing, relationship building, because you WANT to play for them. This is the first time I ever wanted to play for a coach and wanted to make them proud. I think they are both unbelievable people, and it reflects on and off the ice.” “This has been a complete 360 degree turn from last year in a positive way,” said Wood. "These coaches came in just thrilled about being here. They are both alumni, and they both love this school. They love hockey, and they are able to connect with everybody on a personal level. They get along great. Although they came into a rough situation, they did a tremendous job. They stayed positive the whole year, and they honestly do believe we are going to have a great team. They never gave up on us all year. If you look at our first couple of games to now, it's just amazing (what they have done). They have just done wonders with the team this year. Everyone loves them, and we are just going to keep growing. We are going to be a great team.” Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
