Sophomore Stacey Scott made 25 saves and freshman Chelsey Jones scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season as the Northeastern women’s hockey team (2-7-1, 1-3-1 Hockey East) skated to a 3-3 tie against Vermont (2-8-1, 0-4-1 Hockey East) in Burlington, Vt. on Saturday afternoon. With the tie, the Huskies pick up their third conference point of the season, while the Catamounts take home their first Hockey East point this year.

For the second consecutive game, the Huskies came out strong to begin the opening period. Just under two minutes into the game, NU freshman Annie Hogan scored her second goal of the season to give the Huskies a quick one-goal advantage. After classmate Ginny Berg had her initial shot saved by Vermont goaltender Shivaun Siegl, Hogan picked up the rebound and gave Northeastern an early lead.

The lead would not hold up, however, as the teams alternated goals for the remainder of the period. Just after a faceoff, Vermont’s Danielle Ramirez evened the score at the 7:50 mark, taking a pass from Chelsea Furlani and putting it past Scott.

With just over eight minutes remaining in the opening period, Jones notched a point in her sixth consecutive game by taking a pass from senior captain Amy Goodney and beating UVM goaltender Shivaun Siegl to temporarily give her team the lead. The assist was Goodney’s fifth of the season, putting her one behind Jones for the team lead. Unfortunately for the Huskies, the team’s second lead of the game lasted only 34 seconds, as Vermont came right back down the ice to retie the game. This time, Furlani was the one scoring the goal, getting assists from Karen Sentoff and Ashley Keane.

Later in the period, the Huskies dodged a great Vermont chance to take the lead on a five-on-three power play. With Jones and sophomore Ali Bielawski both in the penalty box for NU, Vermont took six shots, but three were blocked and the other three were turned away by Scott. On the afternoon, Northeastern killed off all nine of Vermont's power plays, allowing the team to stay in the game.

Play was even for most of the second period, but the Huskies got a late spark to take the lead for the third time. With the second period winding down, sophomore Colleen Sanborn gave the Huskies a lead heading into the third period with a power-play tally at the 18:58 mark. The goal, which came on the Huskies' third power-play opportunity of the game, was assisted by Bielawski.

Northeastern was unable to put the game away in the final period, however. Vermont’s Kate Lesniak took a Kristi Anderson pass in the high slot and beat Scott 7:08 into the final period, tying the game at three. Neither team could score for the final 13 minutes of regulation or the five minutes of overtime.

Scott made 25 saves for the Huskies in earning her first point in a Husky uniform. Her record on the season improves to 0-3-1. Siegl stopped 20 shots for the Catamounts in raising her record to 2-4-1.

Northeastern will return to Hockey East action tomorrow afternoon when the team travels to Storrs, Conn., for a difficult matchup with Connecticut at the Freitas Ice Forum. UConn currently sits atop the Hockey East standings with a 5-0-0 mark after defeating Boston University this afternoon. The battle of the Huskies will begin at 1 p.m.
