In the second game of the season, the Northeastern women's hockey team scored twice in one minute to skate to a 2-2 tie against the North Dakota Fighting Sioux on Saturday. Freshman Alyssa Wohlfeiler and senior captain Nikki Petrich registered the two Husky goals late in the third period, while freshman goaltender Leah Sulyma managed 26 saves on the afternoon.
North Dakota got on the board early, when, at 3:57 in the first, Cassandra Flanagan notched her second goal of the season at even strength with assists from Casie Hanson and Nikki Hebert. That was all the scoring that would be done until the final five minutes of regulation time.
The Huskies put the pressure on North Dakota in the second, launching seven shots but unable to score on any of them.
The third period brought high intensity and stellar goaltending for both teams. The Huskies were able to tie the game up at one apiece when Wohfeiler received a pass from Lindsay Berman and put it past North Dakota goaltender Brittany Kirkham for her first collegiate goal, and it couldn't have come at a better time. Katy Applin earned the first of her two assists on the play.
The Fighting Sioux answered back 12 second later when Jodi Holland beat Sulyma off a rebound for the go-ahead goal at 16:43. But, as was the case on Friday, the Huskies would not give up. Coach Laura Schuler pulled goalie Sulyma in favor of having an extra skater, and the risk paid off. Within a minute, Petrich tied the game up 2-2 with her first tally of the season from Applin and last season's leading scorer Chelsey Jones.
The Huskies got one shot off in the overtime period, while North Dakota registered three, but, much like in the second period, neither team was able to get the puck in the back of the net and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
After today's game, the Huskies stand at 0-1-1 on the young season. They'll return to action on Friday as they take on Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., at 6 p.m.
