The Huskies got two goals from sophomore Chelsey Jones in the second period but could not hold off the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Friday night and fell by a score of 4-3.
Quinnipiac jumped on the board first thanks to an Antoinette Maldonado breakaway. Maldonado took a pass from Brandice Monize and beat Northeastern goalie Leah Sulyma at 16:16 for her first goal of the season, giving the Bobcats the early lead. Quinnipiac padded its lead a few minutes later when Elyse Cole took a hard wrist shot that found net, giving Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.
As they have all season, the Huskies fought back and had a goal within the first two minutes of the second period. Chelsey Jones, the Huskies' leading scorer from last season, recorded her first goal of the new season on a Huskies power play, bringing Northeastern to within one. After Erica Bolognino was whistled for roughing, Alyssa Wohlfeiler won the ensuing faceoff, sending the puck to Jones. Jones took it all the way to the net for the goal.
The Bobcats answered back when Vicky Graham scored a five-on-three goal with Kristi Kehoe and Jones in the box for Northeastern, putting the Bobcats up 3-1.
The Huskies made a push as captain Nikki Petrich celebrated her 100th game played by scoring the 31st goal of her career late in the final period with help from Cassie Sperry.
Much later in the period, Karrah Stephen registered a goal for Quinnipiac with help from Jessica Buttaro and Moniz, who earned her second assist of the night, to push the Bobcats' lead back up to two goals.
But under a minute later, Jones scored her second goal of the game, again bringing the Huskies to within one.
The Huskies out-shot Quinnipiac 32-21 but could not find net again and left the TD Banknorth Sports Center with their second loss of the season. Sulyma managed 17 saves for the Huskies.
Northeastern takes the ice again on Saturday as they host Niagara at Matthews Arena at 2 p.m.
