The Northeastern Huskies lost in a very competitive battle to No. 8 Connecticut on Saturday by a score of 1-0. Britney Chandler had the game-winner for UConn, giving the team the 2-0-1 season series advantage over NU.
Unlike Friday's contest, Connecticut got on the board first, when Britney Chandler got by the Husky defense and shot the pick past NU goalie Leah Sulyma and into the lower left corner behind the post for her second goal of the season. Michelle Binning and Samantha Reid had the assists on the play.
UConn had a few more scoring chances, but was stifled by Sulyma who made a number of great saves, including a spectacular stick save on Dominique Thibault. In the period, Connecticut held a shot-advantage of 13-7.
Northeastern's defense settle down in the second frame, allowing only three shots which were all saved by Sulyma. Meanwhile, NU was trying to generate offense and got 12 shots on goal. Unfortunately UConn goalie Brittany Wilson was able to stop them all, to keep Connecticut ahead 1-0 heading into the final stanza.
Once again Connecticut came out shooting in the third period, firing 17 shots total. Sulyma showcased her talent, stonewalling UConn for the entire period. NU could not get the offense it in the third, taking only five shots, and left the ice with a 1-0 loss.
Sulyma finished the day with 32 saves while counterpart Brittany Wilson made 24 for the shutout.
The loss drops the NU Huskies to 5-16-3, and 4-8-1 in Hockey East. Up next they'll take on top-ranked Harvard in the opening round of the Beanpot on Tuesday at Walter Brown Arena. the puck is set to drop at 5 p.m.
