The Huskies scored twice in the third period but could not come back from a four-goal deficit and fell to Maine 4-2 on Saturday at Matthews Arena. NU falls to 6-18-3, and 5-9-1 in Hockey East.
Maine scored first in the game, taking advantage of a powerplay. Chelsey Jones was called for tripping, giving the Black Bears the man-advantage. Lexie Hoffmeyer was able to beat NU goalie Sulyma for her third goal of the season at 14:02. She was assisted Danielle Cyr and Taryn Peacock.
Three minutes later, Maine put up another goal, this one by Kim Meagher, her first of the season. Pam Patterson assisted on the play, giving the Black Bears a 2-0 lead at the end of one.
Maine wasn't satisfied with a two-goal lead and struck at 6:41 while shorthanded. Vanessa Vani was allowed to get point-blank on Sulyma and fired the puck right by her. Patterson got her second assist of the day, as she passed to Vani from behind the net.
At 12:09 the Black Bears struck again, this time from Amy Stech. She was assisted by Vani.
At the end of two, it was 4-0 Maine, as the Black Bears were outshooting the Huskies 27-22.
The Huskies had many opportunities to score in the third but could not capitalize. They outshot the Bears 14-3 but all the shots were right at Turgeon.
It looked as though the Huskies had finally broken through. At 5:02 Jones socred her 10th goal of the season. Sophomore Katy Applin had taken the initial shot that was saved by Turgeon and Jones caught the rebound to give the Huskies a goal.
Jones struck again again for her second of the game and her 11th goal of the season at 6:32. She was assisted by Ginny Berg.
Then the Huskies went on a 5-on-3 advantage when Jenna Cowan was called for tripping and Elyce Thomas was sent to the box for elbowing. But again the Huskies pointed all their shots right at Turgeon and could not find net.
Maine takes the season series 2-1-0 and earned its second conference win of the season.
Turgeon was solid in net for the Bears with 36 saves. Sulyma was not her usual self, but still managed 27 stops in the night. It marks the first time Sulyma has played a whole game without making 30 or more saves since Dec. 1.
Up next, the Huskies will take on Boston College in the consolation round of the Beanpot on Tuesday at Walter Brown Arena. The Huskies won the regular season series with the Eagles 2-1-0.
