Boston, MA

Forward Kristi Kehoe and goaltender Leah Sulyma of the women’s hockey team were both selected to the Hockey East Mission All-Rookie team, the league announced on Friday. The All-Rookie team is chosen by the head coaches of Hockey East who vote on the league’s best rookies regardless of position. Sulyma, the runner-up for Hockey East Rookie of the Year, was also presented with the Humboldt Storage and Moving "Three Stars" Award.

Kehoe, from Bakersfield, Calif., led the Huskies with 14 assists and scored 11 goals for a team-high 25 points in 33 games. In overall freshman scoring, she ranked second in Hockey East and ninth in the nation. She also finished third in the league with four powerplay goals and sixth with eight conference powerplay points.

It did not take long for Kehoe to make an impact, as she posted a goal and two assists in her collegiate debut on Oct. 5 at Minnesota, a team currently ranked No. 4 in the USCHO Poll. Throughout the season, Kehoe posted a trio of three-game point streaks and one two-game point streak. She also had a team-best six multiple-point games and was the only player to have a point in all seven of Northeastern’s wins, scoring four goals and six assists, five on game-winning goals, for 10 points in the seven games.

Kehoe graduated from Liberty High School in Bakersfield where she participated in track and field for three years and basketball for two years, serving as captain for one. She also spent six seasons playing for the California Selects hockey team, including last season with the Under-19 squad. Kehoe captained the Under-16 team in 2005-06, scoring 33 goals and adding 21 assists for 54 points as the team finished second at the National Championship. In 2004-05 Kehoe led the team to an Under-16 National Championship with 58 points on 35 goals and 23 assists.

Sulyma, a native of Inuvik, Northwest Territories, completed a record-breaking freshman season for the Huskies in which she made an incredible 973 saves in 31 games, tops in Hockey East and fourth in the NCAA. Sulyma now holds the NU freshman saves record, breaking Shannon Meyers’ previous record of 775 that stood for 12 seasons, and also ranks second on Northeastern’s single-season saves list and ninth on the career-saves list. This season Sulyma made 40 or more saves seven times and 30 or more saves in 20 games, including a streak of eight-straight games from Dec. 2 - Jan. 26 which tied a school record. Statistically she had the strongest season for a Husky goaltender since Olympian Chanda Gunn’s final season in 2003-04. Despite facing 1,067 shots, Sulyma posted a .912 save percentage, fourth-best in Hockey East, and a 3.12 goals against average. For her efforts this season, Sulyma has been honored as Hockey East’s Rookie of the Week a league-high five times and was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Month for December.

Throughout the season, Sulyma earned a Star of the Game in 13 of the 21 league contests and was named the First Star of the Game on five occasions which clinched her the "Three Stars" Award. She is the first freshman in the history of Women's Hockey East to win the award.

Sulyma previously played for St. Albert Rush in 2006-07, posting a 9-2-5 record, a 2.06 goals against average and a .938 save percentage. In the 2007 Canada Winter Games, Sulyma recorded 90-save and 104-save games, helping her Northwest Territories team to its first-ever win at the Games. She is a two-time selection to the Canadian National Aboriginal team and allowed only 11 goals on 184 shots in two games against Ontario South at the latest National Aboriginal Championship. Sulyma also won a silver and bronze medal at the 2004 and 2006 Arctic Winter Games with her Northwest Territories team. She is a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Hockey Academy.

It marks the first time since 2002-03 that Northeastern has placed two players on the All-Rookie squad. Sulyma is also the first Husky to win the Three Stars Award since Chanda Gunn was honored in 2003-04.
