Sulyma garners Rookie of the Week honors

Freshman goaltender Leah Sulyma of the women’s hockey team was named Hockey East Association Rookie of the Week for a league-high fifth time this season, the conference announced on Monday.

Sulyma kept Northeastern competitive in both games with Boston University this past weekend, making 73 saves for a .936 save percentage in the two games. On Saturday, Sulyma made 42 saves, including 21 in the first period alone, in the 2-0 loss and followed it up with a 31-save effort on Sunday. The games marked the seventh time this season Sulyma has made 40 or more saves in a game and the 20th time she has recorded 30 or more saves.

It is the fifth time Sulyma has been named Hockey East Rookie of the Week. She was previously honored on Dec. 10 after stopping 32 of 33 shots in a 3-1 Northeastern victory over then-No. 9 Boston College, again on Jan. 7 after an 82-save weekend that included a career-high 47 in an overtime, 1-0 loss at Yale. Sulyma then garnered consecutive Rookie of the Week honors on Feb. 4 after making 66 saves on 68 shots in two games against No. 8 Connecticut and on Feb. 11 after a career regulation-high 47 saves in the Beanpot tournament, holding No. 1 Harvard to just three goals on 50 shots. Following the Harvard game, Sulyma made 60 saves in two games against Maine, including 33 in a 3-1 win on on Feb. 8 in which she also contributed an assist. Overall it is the sixth time Sulyma has been recognized by Hockey East, as she was also selected as the league’s Rookie of the Month for December, after posting a 2-1-0 record, .941 save percentage, 2.00 goals against average and 95 saves in three games.

Sulyma has just completed a record-breaking freshman season at Northeastern in which she made an astonishing 973 saves, tops in Hockey East and fourth in the entire NCAA Division I. Sulyma now holds the NU freshman saves record, breaking Shannon Meyers' previous record of 775 that stood for 12 seasons. After this weekend’s performance, Sulyma moved up to second on NU’s single-season saves list and ninth on the career saves list. Statistically Sulyma had the most sound season for a Husky goaltender since Olympian Chanda Gunn’s final season in 2003-04. Despite facing 1067 shots, Sulyma posted a .912 save percentage and a 3.12 goals against average.

The Inuvik, Northwest Territories, native previously played for St. Albert in 2006-07, recording a 9-2-5 record, a 2.06 goals against average and a .938 save percentage. In the 2007 Canada Winter Games, Sulyma recorded 90-save and 104-save games, helping the team to its first-ever win at the Games. She is a two-time selection to the Canadian National Aboriginal team and a also won a silver and bronze medal at the 2004 and 2006 Arctic Winter Games with her Northwest Territories team.
