Northeastern took a 2-1 loss to Boston University Saturday in the Quarterfinals of the Hockey East tournament. The game was tied going into the third, but BU's Jenelle Kohanchuk netted the game-winner at 12:47 in the third.

The first five minutes of the first period were uneventful, with both teams checking hard in the neutral zone, denying posession and shootig opportunities. Northeastern was forced to go on the penalty kill five minutes into the period when Lindsay Berman was whistled for hooking. On the ensuing BU power play, Florence Schelling made a great save to keep the score tied at 0-0. BU's Melissa Anderson took a feed in the slot, and took an open shot from 10 feet out, but Schelling made the save with the glove.

BU began to press the attack harder as the period unfolded, and leveraged a 16-5 shot advantage in the frame. BU saw a golden opportunity with four and a half minutes left in the period, when a loose puck trickled out in front of Northeastern's goal. Schelling could not get through the traffic in front of her to cover up, and several NU defenders couldn't manage to get a stick on the puck to clear it. Schelling eventually fought through the traffic to end the play. On the ensuing face-off, BU's Gina Kearns fed a pass to Jillian Kirchner on the back post for a quick one-timer, but Schelling was in position to make the save.

BU's offensive pressure paid dividends two minutes later. On the power play, Kirchner fired a shot from a wide angle on the right side. Schelling got her glove on it, but could not control it, and the puck dropped to the ice inside the crease, where Kearns tapped it in to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.

Northeastern controlled play early in the second, getting a number of good looks at the goal. Annie Hogan saw the puck drop right into her lap after the NU forecheck knocked it away from a BU skater, but her shot went wide. Lindsay Berman had another near-miss for the Huskies when her shot from the right circle was tipped just over the bar by BU goalie Allyse Wilcox. Ali Bielawski also came close to lighting the lamp, when she got a stick on a shot from the left point. She deflected the puck down and past Wilcox, but just wide of the net.

BU recovered from Northeastern's offensive onslaught, and began taking control of play in the second half of the period, much as it did in the first. The Terriers fired a number of shots in on the NU net, but Schelling was in good position to turn them aside.

Northeastern's offense would not go away, however, and tied the game up at 14:11 in the period. Julia Marty, just released from the penalty box, skated hard to the opposite side boards to deliver a stick-check and steal the puck from a BU skater. She played the puck up the boards and into the zone to Kristi Kehoe, who skated in and fired a wrist shot from low on the right side. Wilcox got a piece of the effort, but the rebound dropped to the ice in front of the goal, where Missy Elumba was crashing the crease. Elumba got a stick on the rebound and potted the equalizer to draw Northeastern even.

BU started the third period strong, with a couple of near-misses, the best chance coming on Jonnie Bloemers' one-timer from the slot.

Northeastern's best chance of the period came at the 10-minute mark, when a Julia Marty pass set up two-on-one for Alyssa Wohlfeiler and Annie Hogan. Wohlfeiler dished the puck to Hogan, but her shot went wide.

Boston University tallied the go-ahead goal at 12:47. Freshman Jenelle Kohanchuk collected a loose puck at center ice, beat an NU defender, skated in on Schelling, deked to the right, and lifted a backhand over Schelling's pad to give BU a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Northeastern finishes the season 12-20-3 (7-13-1 Hockey East), the team's best record since 2003-04, and made its first playoff appearance since 2003-04.
