Former Northeastern University All-American goalie Chanda Gunn is returning to the NU women’s hockey team this season as an assistant coach on Laura Schuler’s staff. Gunn will serve as goalie coach and will assist in training and preparation as well as recruiting.

While playing for Northeastern from 2001-04, Gunn was named All-America in 2002 and 2004 and was a Patty Kazmeier Award finalist three times (2002-04). Gunn also won both the prestigious Hockey Humanitarian Award presented to college hockey's finest citizen, and the NCAA Sportsmanship Award in 2004.

In her four years with the Huskies from 2000-04, she won 38 games, earned 11 shutouts and posted a .937 save percentage and a 1.92 goals against average. Both her .937 save percentage and 2,447 career saves rank first all-time at Northeastern.

Gunn has played for Team USA since 2002 and was a member of the bronze medal-winning United States’ 2006 Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team that competed in the 20th Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.

She led Team USA in the squad's Hilton Family Skate to 2006 Tour, playing 413 minutes in 10 games, while posting a team-leading 1.89 goals against average and .901 save percentage. She posted a 5-2-0 record for the team, which faced a mixture of women's college hockey All-Star teams and the Swedish, Finnish and Canadian National Teams. Team USA went 11-5-0 in those contests.

A native of Huntington Beach, Calif., Gunn helped Team USA to its first gold medal at the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Championships in 2005, including a 1-0 shootout victory over Team Canada in the final. Gunn made 26 saves in the contest and turned away three of four Canada attempts in the shootout. She was named the tournament's top goaltender.

At Northeastern, Gunn will work with the young group of Huskies vying for the starting goalie position. Sophomore Sarah Belliveau, sophomore transfer Stacey Scott from Providence College and freshman Sydney Arbelbide will compete for the starting job.

The women’s hockey season kicks off Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. with a home exhibition game against the Bluewater Jr. Hawks.

With the addition of Gunn, the NU coaching staff becomes an All-Husky lineup, as both Schuler and assistant coach Linda Lundrigan graduated from NU in 1994.
