Women's hockey signs six to National Letters of Intent
Nov. 21, 2005

The Northeastern women’s hockey team has received six National Letters of Intent for the 2006-07 freshman class, head coach Laura Schuler announced Monday. The Husky coaching staff made defense a major focus, bringing in three blueliners and one forward/defenseman, as well as a pair of talented forwards for next season.

“This incoming class brings us size across the board,” Schuler said. “Size is so important at the Division I level, and this class addresses that.”

With three senior defensemen on this year’s squad, Schuler and assistant coach Linda Lundrigan saw three defensemen commit to Northeastern during this year’s early signing period, including two from the North American Hockey Academy in Burlington, Vt. Both NAHA players will be far from home next year as both grew up in Alaska. Ginny Berg, a native of Sterling, and Katy Applin, who hails from Palmer, will be called upon to solidify what will be a very young defensive corps next year.

“Katy has very good skills, she’s big and she’s fast, and she’s very creative. We look for her to be an offensive threat and she will be a player who sees a good amount of time on both the power play and penalty kill right away.

“Ginny is so strong and so powerful, and she will play the special teams immediately too. She’s more defensive-minded than Katy, but when she has the puck, she’s like a train that can’t be stopped.”

Berg and Applin were Co-MVPs for NAHA in 2004-05. Berg is serving as a captain this season and was the valedictorian of her Skyview High School class. Applin was selected to participate in the United States Player Development Festival in both 2004 and 2005.

Also helping the defense next season will be Julia Clark, who attends prep school power Cushing Academy. Clark, a Westford, Mass., native who won Cushing’s Team Defenseman Award in 2004, helped lead the Penguins to the New England Prep Division I Finals in 2003 and 2004 and to the Semifinals in 2005. Before Cushing, Clark played for seven years with the Assabet Valley Girls’ program and one year with the Chelmsford Lions.

“Julia’s a kid who sees the ice really well,” Schuler said. “She has a good sense for the game. As she matures into the college game, she could have a big impact for Northeastern.”

Lindsay Berman has played both forward and defense for the Washington Pride of the Midwest Elite Hockey League. The Odenton, Md., native participated in the U.S. Player Development Festival from 2003-05 and helped the Pride to the Southeast District championship in both 2004 and 2005. In 2004-05 she finished sixth in the MWEHL in scoring with 15 goals and nine assists in 19 games.

“Lindsay can play both forward and defense for us,” Schuler said. “She’s a utility player that can play anywhere and play it well. She’s a true forward, but she played defense at the U.S. Development Festival because none of the four players taken from her district played defense. She has great size, excellent skill and sees the game tremendously well.”

Chelsey Jones will join NU in 2005-06 after being one of the top forwards in Minnesota high school hockey. The Lake Elmo, Minn., native won six letters from Stillwater High School and served as the team’s captain each of the last three seasons. She was named team MVP in 2003-04 and 2004-05 and is a three-time All-State, All-Metro and All-Conference selection. In 2004-05 she totalled more than 70 points for Stillwater.

“Chelsey is a natural goal scorer,” Schuler said. “She’s fast, she’s strong and she’s a clutch player. She opened up her season in Minnesota scoring a hat trick this past weekend. She is regarded by her peers as one of the top players in Minnesota.”

Annie Hogan in entering her fourth season at Lawrence Academy and has also played for the Assabet Valley Midgets. She is a three-time participant at the U.S. Player Development Festival, and was selected Team MVP and to the All-ISL Team in 2004-05. Hogan helped Assabet to six straight Massachusetts State Championships and a National Championship in 2003, and was the leading goal scorer at the National Tournament in 2005. While at Assabet, she was a teammate of current NU freshman Ali Bielawski.

“Annie, though small, is very strong and is a great playmaker,” Schuler said. “She loves to shoot the puck and is very fast. She’s a local product, being from Medford, which is good for our program.”

Northeastern is back in action Tuesday, Nov. 22 with a road contest against New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
