BOSTON, MA – The America Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) announced this year’s JOFA Division I All-American teams and three Huskies were selected. Senior co-captain Brooke Whitney (Snohomish, WA) was a first team selection while both sophomore Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, CA) and Kim Greene (Everett, MA) were second team choices.
Also, second-year head coach Joy Woog, who guided the Huskies to a 27-7-1 record, tying the school record for wins in a season, has been named a finalist for National Coach of the Year. The winner will be announced during the annual AHCA Convention on Saturday April 27.
Whitney, one of three finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award, was named the ECAC Eastern Player of the Year. The senior led the league in points with 56 and goals 32. She ranks third in the country in both categories. A second-team All-American and first team All-Conference selection a year ago, Whitney earned a spot on the first team All-Conference again this season. She is the first Northeastern player to earn two first team All-Conference honors. Whitney’s 56 points this season rank sixth best all-time at NU and her 31 goals are fourth most. She played a part in 52.0 percent of the Northeastern offense this season and scored 30.0 percent of the team’s goals. In her four years, Whitney played in 120 career games with 86 goals, 86 assists and 172 points. She ranks third all-time at NU in goals, fourth in assists and fourth in points. She is one of only two Northeastern players ever to have three seasons with at least 40 points.
Gunn, who took over the reigns from graduated All-American Erika Silva in net for the Huskies, put together a tremendous season in net. She started 31 of NU’s 35 games this season after only starting one as a freshman. The sophomore had a 23-6-1 record with a 1.37 goals against average and .950 save percentage with six shutouts. She established NU school season records for wins and save percentage. Gunn allowed two goals or less in 27 of 31 starts with six shutouts. She was at her best in the postseason, stopping 83 of 84 shots over three games with a pair if shutouts to earn Most Outstanding Player honors. Earlier in the season Gunn was named one of 10 candidates for the Kazmaier Award.
Greene, who was also a first team ECAC Eastern All-Conference selection, established herself as one of the top defensemen in the nation this year with 13 goals, 28 assists and 41 points. She set Northeastern records for points and assists in a season. In 100 career games, Greene had put together a 32-58-100 line. She ranks first all-time at NU among defensemen in goals and points and second in assists.
Woog came to Northeastern at the beginning of the 2000-01 season after one season as the head coach at Sacred Hart University in Fairfield, Conn. In only her second season at the helm of the Huskies, Woog led NU to an 11-win improvement over last season. The Huskies were picked for fourth place in the preseason and were unranked in both national polls at the onset of the season. NU finished the season ranked sixth in the county and in second place in the ECAC Eastern, advancing to the conference championship game for the first time since 1997.
