In their final game of the 2000 season, the Northeastern women's soccer team defeated America East foe Delaware 1-0 at Sweeney Field on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Kelly Smith took senior Jen Herlihy's corner and headed it past Delaware goalie Rachel Bersin at 23:29.

A physical and exciting game followed, with no team scoring again. Delaware got its best opportunity with just over 18 minutes remaining in the game when Blue Hen forward Mandy Merritt shot a blast at NU goalie senior Sarah Reidel from 15 yards out. Reidel made a great save on the play in her final game as a Husky.

Fellow seniors, Jen Herlihy, Kate Mercier and April Watson also ended their four-year careers at Northeastern.

In the win, NU improved to 11-6-1 on the season and 5-4 in America East play, as Delaware dropped to 11-7-1 overall and 4-5 in the conference.

Neither team advances to the America East playoffs which are to be played next weekend in Hartford, Conn.
