| 2002 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Maine 1
Sophomore Jennifer North scored 8:03 into overtime to lift the Huskies over Maine 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Parsons Field. The win ended a four-game losing streak in which the Huskies were shut out each time. NU improved to 5-6-3 (1-2-1 America East) and dropped Maine to 4-7-1 (0-3-1). "It was a great win and we needed it," said NU head coach Ed Matz. "Our backs were really up against the wall." Northeastern had several chances in the first half but couldn't score. Two North shots hit the post and freshman Jess Pfeifer put one over the Maine goal. Maine's Kate Crawford had several scoring opportunities but the Husky defense, led by sophomore Jessica Olds, stifled her attempts and the score remained 0-0 at halftime. Maine's Heather Hathorn scored the first goal of the day 1:30 into the second half. She took a cross-field pass from Annie Hamel and sent the ball past outstretched NU goalie Cynthia Slowik. Two minutes later, Hamel appeared to score again but Maine was called for an offside violation and the score remained 1-0. Nine minutes later, Northeastern's Andi Matthews punched in a corner kick to tie the score. The goal at 55:17 was the first of Matthews' career. The teams traded possession throughout the rest of regulation to send the game into overtime. In overtime, Slowik made several nice saves to preserve the Huskies' chances. North capitalized on this, taking the ball into Maine territory. She moved around goalie Naomi Welsh, who had vacated the net, and beat two Maine defenders before scoring the goal. "She's a great leader and has really stepped it up the past two weeks," Matz said about North. Slowik went the distance for the Huskies, making four saves and earning the win. Matthews' goal at 55:17 was the team's first goal in over 484 minutes. Scoring
